Packed and ready for the return journey to England. There isn’t a spare millimetre in my rucksack and I might have picked up a new musical instrument on the way! Our trip around Malaysia, Borneo, Indonesia and the Philippines has been one to cherish and a trip of a lifetime.

Thank you to all those who have made us feel welcome. We love you and your way of life. Everyone we have met has been happy to meet us and share whatever they have. It’s taught us a lot about not stressing the small stuff, how you can make something wonderful with the right people and how you can live for four months with only one bag of clothes!!! Who knew.

We will be having more trips in the future so watch this space. ✈️ 🚊 🚗

So, in order to provide a balanced view we visited the Surrender Point and Japanese Peace Garden, on Labuan. Let’s not forget that many many Japanese lost their lives in World War II, just like when we have visited German war graves it is very sobering and what a waste of young men’s lives. After all they were somebodies son, father or husband.

The Surrender Point is on the spot where a shack used to be, it marks the spot where a Major General of the Japanese Army surrendered to a Lieutenant General of the Australian Army and ended the conflict on Borneo - notably 8 days after the Japanese had surrendered to the Americans.

Whilst there is no doubt that the Japanese committed ‘henous crimes’ during the course of the war, I’m not sure that dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were necessary. I am no expert though!!!

It is such a beautiful place, the beach is amazing and it seems so wrong that it was the scene of destruction. The Peace Garden itself is beautiful and ….peaceful.

What I do hope is that we have learnt some lessons from that time. With all the conflicts going on around the world currently it is sometimes worrying. I hear talk of preparing for war! Let’s pray for peace, work for peace and accept our differences. The message of the Peace Garden is ‘Peace is Best’, and who can argue with that!

The Commonwealth War Graves on Labuan are worth visiting. It’s a hard read and shocking how many died, particularly prisoners of war brought here from Singapore. We often only consider the effects of the war in Europe but British and Commonwealth personnel fought (and died) all over the world.

This isn’t our first visit to a Commonwealth Cemetery in this part of the world, the last was near the river Kwai in Thailand, equally thought provoking after reading how prisoners of war were treated.

Nice little town of Kuala Penyu. I expect it’s quite busy in the summer but very quiet at the beginning of February. Little stop on our way to Labuan. The main road that will eventually run through Borneo and through Brunei is coming along. They have made lots of progress since the last time we were here two years ago and some sections are being used now. It could be a while before the whole length is finished though!!

The celebrations continue with fireworks by night and dancing in the day. The time of the Lunar New Year marks the beginning of Spring and is celebrated in many Asian countries.

Churches and temples. I find the cultural mix very onteresting in Malaysia, although a Muslim country with some beautiful Mosques, there are also lots of other religions. Mainly Catholic Churches, like the city cathedral here with its fantastic statues depicting the signs of the cross and this Chinese Temple with its brilliant Pagoda that can be seen for miles across the city. But also the Sikh’s Gudwara, Anglican Church, Buddhist Temple and Hindu Temples. We had to laugh at the Giant Buddha someone had put it their garden opposite and facing the Chinese Temple, as in protest!

Nice day for a hike, although in places a little like rock climbing! Lovely views over Kota Kinabalu and the South China Sea. We are staying in the white block of apartments to the left of the next to last photo, The Shangri-la Hotel is the building with the red roof. Apparently a new 20 story hotel will be built in the middle of the two - it will spoil the view from this particular spot!

A nice little Italian by the Waterfront. All the decorations up for Chinese New Year next week. Apparently no dusting or sweeping next week - you don’t want to sweep away the luck. I love these superstitions, had many passed down from my own Grandma but people around the world have lots of their own, which are new to me. It’s fascinating 🤨

A visit to the fish market in Papar - lovely fresh fish, I’m told people come here from miles around to buy fish.

Followed by a visit to a hotel between Papar and Kota Kinabalu where we spent Christmas Day two years ago, for a Singapore Sling - well why not?

Just a few more photos of the wildlife around Bako National Park.
