Johor Flying Club members had a nice time on 29 September 2026 morning touring the ATC tower (at the passenger terminal) and Approach (at the building where the CAAM forerunner, Department of Civil Aviation, used to conduct the written and radio tests) installations.
Our hosts, Mr Mohd Ramisham bin Mahmud and Mr Kalai Selvam A/L Govindan, showed us how the tower and approach staff handled flights and weather, the systems used to create a smooth flow between incoming and outgoing aircraft, and spoke about the physical developments around the airport.
For many of the 13 JFC members who attended the event, this was their first view inside the tower at Senai International Airport, although several had visited other towers in Malaysia.
This was followed by a presentation at the CAAM conference room where we were shown the plans for the upcoming changes to the airport. These included the switch to remote tower systems (which will be housed at the ex-DCA exam centre), leaving an empty Tower as a sign of the March of Progress.
Our members had a chance to ask questions or seek clarifications about procedures, opportunities for closer communication between our club and the ATC team, and so on.
Mr Mohd Ramisham and Mr Kalai Selvam then brought us to the approach radar centre to show us how they tracked and sequenced aircraft.
At the conclusion, our President Lim Kim Chuan and Accountable Manager Izmir Hadi bin Husein presented gifts to the hosts in thanks for the visit. The JFC educational event ended with a lunch (of course) at Tea Garden.
It was both an educational and an enjoyable tour.
It came about because a member, Ken Sng, mentioned it. As a better understanding of how the ATC team operates would be beneficial for our aviators, not to mention that anything which improves communication between Tower staff and our members is a big plus, Paul Jansen contacted CAAM which replied promptly and cleared the group speedily.
We thank CAAM for approving the trip.
