Furnas doesn’t feel like the rest of São Miguel. The whole valley smells faintly of sulphur, steam rises out of the ground in random spots along the roadside, and somehow it’s still one of the most peaceful places I’ve been.
This avenue is inside Terra Nostra Park, planted in the 1880s. Walk to the end and you hit a marble obelisk built in 1896 for the Viscounts of Praia, the family who developed the garden. Four griffins hold their crests.
But the real reason people come to Furnas is lunch. Cozido das Furnas gets lowered into the ground in pots near Lagoa das Furnas, cooked for hours by volcanic heat alone, then pulled out and served straight from the earth. Meats, sausages, cabbage, potatoes, all of it. You eat it and then you need a two hour nap, which is also part of the experience.
If a trip built around moments like this sounds like your kind of travel, DM me your dates and I’ll start planning.
