Ministry of Trade and Entrepreneurship

REF: TI 1/19/6 II (65) 19th May 2026

PRESS RELEASE

China Opens Its Market to Botswana Products — No Import Tax

The Ministry of Trade and Entrepreneurship informs Batswana businesses that China has removed import taxes (tariffs) on qualifying products from Botswana from 1 May 2026. This means original Botswana products can now enter the Chinese market without extra tax costs, making it easier and cheaper for local businesses to sell goods in one of the world’s biggest markets.

This is a big opportunity for Botswana businesses to grow exports and create jobs. The Ministry highlights the following as some of the prime sectors for immediate exploitation under this offer:

• Beef and livestock products
• Processed food and horticulture products
• Leather and textile products
• Arts and crafts

To ensure seamless trade facilitation, Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS) has activated immediate customs procedures. BURS is currently adapting its systems to fast-track documentation, clear export paths and issue the required Rules of Origin certification for China-bound cargo.

The Ministry urges manufacturers, farmers and entrepreneurs to take advantage of the opportunities provided by this market. Local companies interested in exporting under this preferential tariff regime must register their products with BURS for compliance checks on rules of origin. For registration details and technical inquiries, please contact BURS Rules of Origin Desk at 363 9616/17/18, 363 9916 or visit the nearest BURS Regional Office.

The companies are further advised to access applicable tariff treatment at https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WwFoHBTbyn5JFAKvm2fa3-nTF-Yono4o/view?usp=sharing.
