So rare that seeing one in the wild is a bucket-list dream all on its own. And for us at Atelier Africa, it’s one we hope to tick off one day.
Part zebra in looks. All giraffe in blood. Meet the okapi, one of Africa’s rarest and most elusive animals.
Found only in the dense Ituri Rainforest of the DR Congo, the okapi’s distinctive stripes help it disappear into the forest. Its long tongue strips leaves much like a giraffe’s, its closest living relative, and it remained unknown to Western science until 1901.
Seeing an okapi in the wild is right at the top of the wish list. A truly extraordinary animal, and a sight very few travellers will ever be lucky enough to experience.
