๐–๐จ๐ซ๐ฅ๐ ๐…๐จ๐จ๐ ๐ƒ๐š๐ฒ is celebrated annually on October 16 to mark the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in 1945.

It raises global awareness about hunger, malnutrition, and the need for secure, sustainable food systems for everyone.

Events and outreach activities take place in over 150 countries, organized by governments, communities, and partner organizations.

Campaigns emphasize reducing food waste, supporting smallholder farmers, and making agri-food systems more resilient to climate change and economic shocks.

Gondwana Collection Namibia is contributing in its own small way. Through the MealforTwo programme, the Gondwana Care Trust supports vulnerable communities across Namibia by partnering with local organisations and soup kitchens to provide essential food supplies.

๐“๐ก๐ž ๐‘๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ž ๐Š๐š๐ฅ๐š๐ก๐š๐ซ๐ข ๐๐จ๐ - Situated 30 km north-east of Mariental, among the red dunes of the Kalahari. The word reverie means a pleasant daydream โ€” which is essentially the philosophy behind the property: slow down, disconnect and simply be.

It is inspired by Khoi San traditions and organic forms found in the Kalahari, particularly the ostrich egg, termite hills and sociable weaver nests. The distinctive ivory-coloured dome is intended to feel almost like a protective cocoon in the desert.

There is only one pod.

It accommodates a maximum of two guests, making it exceptionally private and intimate. The property is aimed primarily at couples seeking solitude and romance.

It is smaller and easier to drive than vehicles such as a Fortuner or a large 4x4, while offering considerably more luggage and passenger space than a conventional sedan.

This magnificent animal is one that Namibia is particularly famous for!
The largest population of Greater Kudu in the world may be found in Namibia โ€” making it a genuinely special destination for anyone wanting to observe this magnificent antelope in the wild.

There are actually two distinct species of kudu โ€” the Greater Kudu and the Lesser Kudu. The first calls Namibia its home.

The Greater Kudu is defined by its slender build and iconic spiral horns. It has a tawny to bluish-grey coat with 6โ€“10 vertical white stripes, offering camouflage in dappled woodlands. A white band known as a chevron runs between the eyes, and the head is normally darker in colouration than the body.

The spectacular spiral horns of this handsome antelope are the longest of any antelope โ€” and only the males carry them.

Greater Kudus thrive in mixed scrub woodlands, mopane thickets, and hilly terrains, reaching altitudes up to 2,100 metres. They show a clear preference for areas with rocky hills, riverine woodland and thick shrub cover, which provide both food and shelter from predators. They are absent from open grassland and true desert, though they tolerate semi-arid conditions well.

Great kudus are browsers โ€” they can exist for long periods without drinking, obtaining sufficient moisture from their food, but become water-dependent at times when the vegetation is very dry.

Kudus are renowned for their remarkable jumping abilities โ€” they can effortlessly leap over a 2-metre fence, while a 3-metre barrier can be spontaneously cleared.

Kudu are regularly spotted at several Gondwana properties โ€” including Canyon Lodge and Canyon Village within Gondwana Canyon Park, Kalahari Anib Lodge, and the areas around Etosha Safari Camp. They are one of Namibia's most sought-after photographic subjects, and their sheer elegance and the drama of those magnificent spiral horns make every sighting a memorable one.

It offers a very different desert experience from the towering red dunes around Sossusvlei itself. From the lodge and surrounding ridges, guests can look across the dunes towards distant mountains and a ribbon of riverine vegetation.

One of its big attractions is the changing colour of the landscape around sunrise and sunset, when the fossilised and red dunes take on rich sienna, orange and golden tones.

The rooms are designed to blend into the desert surroundings and have en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning/heating, safes, tea/coffee facilities and private verandas. You can cool off and enjoy the two swimming pools. Scrumptious meals are served in the restaurant and the bar is, of course, a favourite watering hole. At the reception, you will find a beautiful curio shop that is guaranteed to have something special for you.

This camp is essentially a one-night desert experience rather than a conventional lodge. It's about 60 km north of Sesriem, positioned on the crest of ancient dunes with enormous views over the Namib landscape. There are only nine cabins, spaced well apart for privacy.

The bed is on wheels and can be rolled out onto your private deck, so you can sleep outside beneath the Namibian stars. You have an en-suite bathroom with a shower, but you're essentially sleeping in the middle of the desert.

To keep the light pollution at a minimum, the camp is deliberately small and low-impact, with solar power and limited resources.

๐–๐จ๐ซ๐ฅ๐ ๐‘๐ข๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ ๐ƒ๐š๐ฒ - A global celebration held annually on the fourth Sunday of September. In 2026 World Rivers Day is celebrated on the same day as World Tourism Day.

Established in 2005 to raise awareness of the environmental, cultural and recreational value of rivers and encourage people to become better stewards of them.

Why are rivers so important?

Rivers are much more than sources of drinking water. Healthy river systems:
- provide freshwater for people and wildlife
- support fish, birds, insects and other biodiversity
- sustain wetlands and floodplain ecosystems
- transport nutrients and sediment
- support agriculture and livelihoods
- provide opportunities for recreation and tourism
- connect landscapes and ecosystems
- have enormous cultural and historical importance.

And rivers ultimately connect with lakes, wetlands, estuaries and oceans, so looking after a river is also part of looking after the wider water cycle.

Namibia is famous for being one of the world's driest countries, but several major rivers form its borders and support extraordinary concentrations of life.

The Kunene, for example, forms much of Namibia's northern border with Angola and sustains the spectacular landscapes around Epupa Falls.

The Zambezi and Chobe systems in the northeast support the wildlife-rich Zambezi Region, while the Okavango reaches Namibia from Angola and eventually feeds the remarkable wetlands of the Okavango Delta in Botswana.

And Namibia's rivers aren't only about permanent flowing water. Ephemeral rivers such as the Swakop, Kuiseb and Ugab can remain dry for long periods but become ecological lifelines when rainfall arrives.

That makes an important conservation message for Namibia: A river doesn't have to flow all year to be vital. Every river tells a story โ€“ of life, landscape, people and wildlife.
