National Road Safety Council (Namibia) Promoting road safety since 1996.

The National Road Safety Council is a statutory body, created in 1996 by section 2 of the National Road Safety Act, Act 9 of 1972. The NRSC’s mandate is to promote, raise awareness, engage stakeholders and advocate for road safety within Namibia whilst ensuring all necessary efforts are taken towards preventing traffic deaths and injuries with the view of making Namibia’s road network one of the s

- Prepare and systematically carry out a road safety research program in conjunction with the National Transport Commission.
- Collate and analyse road accident data to assess associated risks and disseminate appropriate information to road users by any means deemed fit for such purpose.
- Provide guidance on road safety where necessary.
- Consult with all parties concerned in an effort to assist the Minister in combating road accidents.
- Make inquiries into and report on any matter relating to road safety at the request of the Minister.
- Perform any other task falling within the ambit of the Act as the Minister may impose.
- Make recommendations to the Minister on Council resolution that cannot take effect due to legal impediments.
- Prepare and carry out road safety education programs and other accident prevention measures.

As schools reopen in June, let us reinforce the simple road safety habits that help protect children every day.

• Stop, look both ways, and listen before crossing the road
• Use zebra crossings and wait for the pedestrian signal
• Never run into the road
• Play only in safe areas such as playgrounds and sports fields

Visibility also remains a critical factor in pedestrian and cyclist safety. Children should wear bright or reflective clothing, particularly during early mornings, late afternoons, and at night, to ensure they are clearly visible to motorists.

The National Road Safety Council will continue sharing important child road safety information and practical tips throughout the month of June to support safer journeys to and from school.

The National Road Safety Council (NRSC) successfully concluded the NRSC 5km Walk and 10km Run held on Saturday, 16 May 2026, in commemoration of the UN Global Road Safety Week under the theme, “Make Walking and Cycling Safe.” The event brought together stakeholders and members of the public in a unified demonstration of support for road safety and safer mobility for pedestrians and cyclists.

UN Global Road Safety Week is a global advocacy campaign observed every two years to raise awareness on road safety challenges and promote actions aimed at reducing road traffic crashes, fatalities, and injuries worldwide. The campaign places emphasis on protecting vulnerable road users, including pedestrians and cyclists, while encouraging governments, organisations, and communities to prioritise safer and more sustainable transport systems.

The initiative served as a platform to promote road safety awareness, healthy living, and active community participation, while reinforcing the importance of shared responsibility among all road users. Participants joined the walk and run in support of ongoing efforts aimed at fostering safer and more inclusive road environments across Namibia.

The launch and associated activities further strengthened national road safety advocacy by amplifying key road safety messages and encouraging responsible road use. The event also contributed to broader efforts aimed at reducing road traffic crashes, preventing fatalities and injuries, and safeguarding the wellbeing of all road users.

The National Road Safety Council (NRSC) hosted a 5km Walk and 10km Run on Saturday, 16 May 2026, in Windhoek, held in commemoration of the UN Global Road Safety Week under the theme “Make Walking and Cycling Safe.” The event brought together stakeholders and members of the public in a shared effort to promote road safety, encourage healthier lifestyles, and advance safer mobility for pedestrians and cyclists.

Among those who attended and actively participated in the race were NRSC Chairperson, Mrs Amalia Gawanas, Executive Director in the Ministry of Works and Transport, Mr Jonas Sheelongo, and CEO of the Automobile Association of Namibia, Mrs Hileni Tjivikua, showing strong support for the initiative and its road safety objectives.

NRSC Hosts Official Launch of the UN Global Road Safety Week in Windhoek

Windhoek, Namibia - The National Road Safety Council (NRSC) officially launched the UN Global Road Safety Week on Friday, 15 May 2026, at Dr Antonio Agostinho Neto Square in Windhoek.

The event forms part of Namibia’s continued commitment to the Second Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030, a global framework aimed at reducing road traffic deaths and injuries through strengthened policy implementation, improved infrastructure, enhanced enforcement, and sustained road user education. This national commitment aligns with the objectives of the United Nations Global Road Safety Week, which calls on countries to intensify coordinated action towards safer mobility for all road users.

This year’s campaign places strong emphasis on the protection of pedestrians and other vulnerable road users, including cyclists, who remain among the most at risk on public roads. The initiative underscores the importance of practical, people-centred interventions, strengthened public awareness, and consistent road safety behaviour in reducing road traffic crashes and saving lives.

The official launch brought together government stakeholders, road safety partners, and members of the public, reaffirming a collective commitment to improving road safety outcomes across Namibia.

A key highlight of the programme is the upcoming 10 km community walk and run scheduled for Saturday, 16 May 2026. The initiative will see participants joining in a symbolic demonstration of support for road safety, while also promoting healthy lifestyles and community engagement.

The National Road Safety Council (NRSC), in partnership with the Council of Churches in Namibia, the Namibian Police, and the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund, held the National Prayer Day Against Road Accidents and Advocacy for Road Safety on Wednesday, 13 May 2026.

The gathering took place along the B1 Western Bypass Road, near the B1 Service Station in Windhoek, and formed part of ongoing national efforts to strengthen road safety awareness and reduce road traffic incidents in Namibia.

The event brought together church representatives, community leaders, and members of the public in a moment of reflection and collective commitment to safer road use across the country. It emphasised the shared responsibility of all road users in preventing accidents and promoting a culture of care, discipline, and vigilance on Namibian roads.
