The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), Arsenio Dominguez, has issued an urgent appeal for coordinated global action to free 44 seafarers currently held captive by pirates and armed robbers off the Somali coast. The captured crew members are trapped aboard three vessels, MT Honour 25, Eureka, and Sward, all seized in separate hijackings between April and May this year, in waters off Somalia and the Gulf of Aden.
Dominguez painted a grim picture of the crews’ conditions, describing them as running dangerously short on food and water while living under constant threat of violence. Full story in the comments section.....

Nigerian seafarers have for years paid as much as 20 times the official price to obtain a Seafarers’ Discharge Book, but stakeholders say a new online portal from the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) could finally shut down the racket. Yet industry sources say applicants were routinely charged between N120,000 and N250,000, funnelled through middlemen who exploited a manual, paper-based system rife with hoarding, forgery risk and opaque processing.
