Get Position to tap from the Ginger Billion dollar market.

The 2021 ginger season is now open. There are many players in the ginger value chain, the farmers, local buyers, the seller, the middlemen, the hustlers, the foreigners (trooping to the local villages in their numbers) and lastly you can join the chain if you are positioned well.
This year(2021) ginger season had a lot of factors that worked in its favour, COVID-19 increased the awareness of taking ginger (not suggesting anything), the devaluation of currency affected the price of the commodity.
Despite all this, Nigeria produced 31 million metric tons of ginger while the demand is at 65 million tons that’s 34 million metric ton shortage waiting for you to fill in . However, Nigeria is the third largest producer of ginger in the world. Nigeria’s ginger is the best in the world for its aroma, pungency, high oil content and Oleoresin as its distinctive features.
Ginger open up this season with fresh ginger ranging from N100,000 to N120,000 per ton. Dry split ginger is now going for N900,000 per metric ton; actually this is the farmgate price. International price of fresh ginger hover from $1200 to $1500 per ton, while the price of dry split ginger is dancing around $3000 to $3500 per ton. Ginger powder sells from $25 to $30 per kg, while crystalline ginger flex goes between $3200 to $4000 per ton. Extracted ginger oil selling between $100 or $150 per kg.( Prices of ginger fluctuates like every other commodities )
So, how do you position yourself in this market ? There are different segments of the ginger value chain that you can decide to be a player in. One can decide to play in the farmgates level as a farmer or as an aggregator, from the aggregation centre, processing, distribution and warehousing ( one can do storage to maximize price or hedge against price ) can be undertaken.
Additional, One can decide to go into exporting the following ginger products:
1. Fresh ginger
2. Dry split ginger
3. Ginger powder
4. Crystalline ginger flakes
5. Ginger oil .
Another way to get into these ginger value chain is by being a ginger farmer , get a farm anyway that the soil is suitable for ginger farming . It is a myth that ginger only grows in southern kaduna, they only have more ginger farmers. This makes it why it’s a ginger hub. If you want to plant ginger in the next planting season, now is the best time to get your ginger rhizomes ( ginger seed).
Another means to get into the ginger value chain is by processing , one can process ginger into powder or extract oil from ginger, this pay premium in comparison to just exporting raw ginger without adding any value.
It’s also interesting to understand the different price options in the ginger value chain. There are three price models in the ginger valuechain, namely;
i)Farmgate price
ii) Aggregator price
iii) International price

The Farmgate price is where farmers sell straight from their farm or farmmarket and they don’t understand weight measurement and hence their price is per bag as a against per ton. The Aggregator buys at the farmgates .
The Aggregator price , they established their prices after processing and cleaning the products they bought at the farmgates prices. The aggregators process the products into international and export standard for exporting, he fixes his prices with consideration to what the international prices is.
The international price is one of the main factors that determine the farmgate price and also the Aggregator price. However this price is subject to the value we put in .
Any position you wish to play in the ginger value chain make sure that you are adding value and not just exporting raw material . This create wealth and employment along the value chain and trigger positive economic metric.

Are you a businessman(woman) or an entrepreneur ?

What distinguish a business man from an entrepreneur especially in a country like Nigeria. I think it is in the way the offer solutions. An entrepreneur thinks outside the box and he is innovative with his business ideas, where as a businessman sometimes carries a mass mentality. Everyone goes into a particular line of business and the businessman is there also without any differentiation in his product or services.
In Nigeria, there are ample opportunities that are not yet to be explored especially in the food value chain sector. If you take a bag of Irish potatoes that is 55kg which sell between N15,000 to N20,000 from the farmgate or farm. lf a businessman, takes delivery of the Irish Potatoes he can decides to sell for N25,000 to N35,000 or he can go ahead to divide it into 5kg and sell each for N3500, at the end of the day he would have made at least from 50% to 70% profit. This is what the mass(mentality) do and so the businessman man follow suit.
As a entrepreneur, who thinks outside the box, you could decide to do French fries, potatoes chips, or potatoes flour. If we settle for French fries(which is easier with a kitchen machine) which goes for N1000 per kg at a distributor price, after processing one would have at least 45kg this would translate into N45,000. An entrepreneur would make at least 150% to 200% profit.
Using the above case study you find out that as an entrepreneur you have satisfy your client emotional needs for French fries and has also save them time for peeling and turning the Irish Potatoes .
This line of thinking is what differentiates the businessman from an entrepreneur. So when approaching a business look for ways to multiple value. Think outside the box.

Are you a businessman(woman) or an entrepreneur.????

What will your meal taste like if there was no spice or seasoning in it? One would almost vomit. In this part of our world Spices has become an integral part of a meal. The spice industry is a business industry that we have left to the multinationals that produced seasonings e.g maggi, knorr and the rest but there are ample of opportunities that can be tapped from this billon dollar industry.
Spices are not only limited to our meals only. It is also widely used in the pharmaceutical industry and the cosmetic industry. For e.g. oil extract from ginger as a spice is both used in the pharmaceutical industry as a well as the cosmetic industry. So this one spice has multiple uses. There are many spices in Nigeria that is calling for innovative packaging and processing. A run down of the Spices we have in this country include: Thyme, Curry, Pepper, Black pepper, Nutmeg, Onions, Ginger, African Locust beans, Garlic, cloves, black sesame seed, shallot( you can add to the list).
There is a serious demand for spices and seasonings in Nigeria and abroad. The space to make money in this industry calls for understanding the market and thinking outside the box. If you can package different spice for different meal, e.g if you fill in a single sachet spice that is use for pepper soup, or imaging having a better processing of African locust beans(called Iru in Yoruba,Ogiri Okpi in Igbo and Dawadawa in Hausa)into powder and other spices added or have product that is addition of pepper and crayfish. I can produce a lot of this but I'm limited by space.
Spices like ginger, garlic and tumeric are constantly demanded for export as it is international demanded. Ginger form Nigeria is highly prefer Internationally than Ginger from else where. The goodnews is that one can start this from the comfort of your kitchen.
As earlier said, how to make money form this sector is factor of your innovation and packaging

Making Millions from your Own brand of Tea

Have you ever taken a cup of tea and wish that one day you would own your own brand of tea? This is possible to own a brand and not just a brand but also a unique flavour .
Lately, taking tea has become a part of our culture that we have borrow form other clime. It is not bad but we have not fully tap into the opportunities that this culture has, to create our own unique market.
It is interesting to note that tea drinking help reduce blood glucose and lower the risk of cancer, tea also has antioxidant effect on our body. It would be proper to say that there is a medicinal effect of tea in our body .
We have some many agro raw material that we could turn into tea around us. If you go into some rural communities you notice that there are medicinal drinks that you will be given to cure certain aliments. There are drinks that you are given once you are feeling feverish and in matter of minutes you will be OK. So if you are looking at tea from the medicinal point of view there is a lot around us to turn into tea. (So may be you would start talking with your granny for that special tea recipe.)
Blending Ginger and garlic, spiced up with honey would make a nice tea recipe but most times we think of this products only as raw materials for export, forgetting that we would make more if we export our tea as a finised product. Chairman, this could be your brand. Interesting, you could take it a little further by adding an anticold spice and it will be serving mult purposes.
Ginger, garlic, hibiscus, Cocoa, Mint, Moringa, lemon grass, tiger nut , dates and a lot more can be turn or combine into tea of different flavour ( I can mention more than ten combination) Do you know that our local kunu drink(i don't see it as local anyway)can be turn into tea ( a topic for another day)
So, it is possible to have your own brand of tea, package and sold around the world, with unique flavour that is trademark.

Extracted from my upcoming book.

The season of covid 19 became an August visitor in February, it has made us to see and evaluate our finance from another perspective.

The question is, if this lock down was to continue for another 2 to 3 months how would you fare financially ?

It will be interesting to note that having only one source of income will not sustain your needs, even when you could sustain there is a need to have an additional source of income or multiple sources of income. it is time to think inwardly, there are products that you can market on the side or there are services that you could provide and this becomes a side hustle.
Through one can employ one or two hands to help as the business scale up, more hands will be added .

The question is what side hustle do you do that wouldn’t distract one from the main source of income till this hustle became another major source of income?

There is a whole lot of opportunities scatter around. look for opportunity that align with your passion and has less distraction. For a start you will be looking at bringing cost to barest minimum.

People must eat and having business in the food value chain sector is sector that people can't do without This sector is a gold mine because people eat daily. Your kitchen will be your production unit for a start and with one or two machines you are good to start. One or two extra hands you are good to start depending on what you decide to do .
Let look at some products / services that can be package from the comfort of your kitchen.

1.Turning irish potatoes into french fries
2. Making fruit juice and smoothie.
3. Spices packaging
4.Tea packaging
5. Cashew and other dry fruit packaging
6. Coconut chips
7. Home baking
8. Tomatoes packing ( Seasonal)
9. Flour packaging ( beans, yam and plantain )
10. Home made chinchin, plantain chips and a whole lot more
We need to plan in all we do and side hustle is not an exception. it is important that you get a business plan, ( this will help you to have a sense of direction for the business, what(machinery and technical know how) is require even at the hustling stage.

Get position to make over 100% profits as ginger season opens even when you are not a ginger farmer.

Finally the Ginger season for the year 2016/2017 is open. The farmers, the buyer, the sellers, the middle men, the hustlers, the Indians, the foreigners all them, even you (reading) have an eye on how the market will swing.
The last season 2015/2016 was a very interesting season as Ginger worth $33.1million was exported from Nigeria in all three forms. Ginger could exported fresh, dried split or powdered. This three form command different prices both locally and internationally. The powdered ginger commands the highest price followed by dried split and fresh.
However, they greatest demand for Ginger is dried split ginger, but it all depends on what the buyer needs. So the market for this season opens up at N520,000 to N550,000 per ton depending on the grade. The international price for Ginger at the moment hover around $2,250 to $2500 a ton depending on the port of delivery and the terms of trade. We must also understand that there is high volatility when it comes to Ginger price.
So how do you position to make profit from this season that has just opened?
1. Earn in dollars: Exploit the exchange rate; the international price for ginger is from $2,250 to $2,500 a ton, meaning that you are making over 100% gross profit on each ton. As the season opens an entrepreneur can take advantage of the low price to export.
2. Storage: Ginger price would always shoot high. So you can buy at a lower price, store and sell high when prices appericate.
3. Get into the value chain: Buy the fresh ginger, process and sell.
4. Prepare for planting now against next planting season: The best time to get ginger rhizomes for planting next year is now because it is cheap, by next planting season prices would have double if not triple ( planting of Ginger is not restricted to the north only, we have planted in the west and south)
