Tackling Port Chaos: AMATO Steps In with a Rescue Mission

In a bold move to fix long-standing challenges in Nigeria’s port trucking system, the Association of Maritime Truck Owners (AMATO) has launched a dedicated rescue team in Lagos.

The problem:
• Congestion from indiscriminate parking
• Exploitative practices hurting truckers
• Safety risks from fallen containers & broken-down trucks
• Lack of proper truck parks after port privatisation

The solution:
• Rapid-response rescue team to clear obstructions
• Collaboration with FRSC & LASTMA
• Deployment of motorbikes, communication tools & towing support
• Push for a 3,500-capacity marshalling yard

With new enforcement on unsecured containers starting May 2026, safety on port access roads is set to improve.

This initiative signals a shift from complaints to action-driven reform aiming to restore efficiency, safety, and profitability in port logistics.

A smoother port system means faster trade, safer roads, and a stronger economy.

Big News for Nigeria’s Maritime Sector!

The Nigerian Ports Authority has assured stakeholders that the planned rehabilitation of Apapa and Tin Can Island ports will NOT disrupt operations.

What this means:
• Cargo movement continues seamlessly
• No shutdown of terminals
• Modern upgrades to handle larger vessels
• Stronger positioning for Nigeria as a maritime hub

With a £746 million UK-backed deal and a phased reconstruction approach, the government is taking a bold step toward transforming Lagos ports into world-class facilities.

“Modernisation is critical if Nigeria is to lead maritime trade in the region.”

This is more than a facelift
it’s a strategic move to boost trade, efficiency, and national revenue.

Stakeholders, businesses, and port users can expect continuity and a stronger future.

A defining moment for Nigeria’s port industry is here.

After years of delays, revisions, and intense scrutiny, the Senate has passed the Nigerian Port Economic Regulatory Agency Bill 2026 — setting the stage for a long-awaited transformation in port governance.

Now, all eyes turn to the Presidency.

If assented to, the bill will give full legal backing to the Nigerian Shippers’ Council as the port economic regulator — a move expected to tackle arbitrary charges, eliminate regulatory overlaps, and restore confidence across the maritime sector.

For stakeholders, this isn’t just another bill — it’s a potential turning point for transparency, efficiency, and global competitiveness in Nigeria’s ports.

The question now: will it get the final green light?

Stronger together against drug trafficking.

The Nigeria Customs Service and NDLEA have taken a bold step to deepen collaboration by setting up a joint committee aimed at tightening enforcement, improving accountability, and strengthening the fight against narcotics and organized crime.

From intelligence sharing to prosecution and destruction of seized drugs, both agencies are aligning efforts to ensure no gaps are left in the system.

With Nigeria under global scrutiny in the fight against illicit drugs, this renewed partnership signals a clear message: zero tolerance, stronger coordination, and results that matter.

Can Data Fix Nigeria’s Port Bottlenecks?

A fresh perspective is emerging on how to transform Nigeria’s cargo clearance system—and it’s all about combining enforcement with intelligence.

Former PSTT Coordinator, Moses Fadipe, says the CRFFN can build a stronger enforcement framework by blending lessons from the PSTT model with insights from its new User Experience Diary.

Here’s the shift:
• PSTT = Direct enforcement & agency oversight
• CRFFN Diary = Real-time feedback & data-driven insights

The real opportunity?
Turning data into action—using patterns of delays, inefficiencies, and infractions to drive smarter enforcement strategies.

A system that listens, learns, and enforces could finally deliver the transparency and efficiency Nigeria’s ports need.

Will this hybrid approach be the game-changer for freight forwarding in Nigeria?
