| Before helicopters became part of everyday commercial aviation, they first had to prove they could operate beyond the military environment.
In 1946, the Bell Model 47 became the first helicopter to receive civil certification, marking a major milestone in the development of commercial rotary-wing aviation. The U.S. Civil Aeronautics Authority awarded the aircraft its airworthiness type certification, allowing the Model 47 to enter the civil market and be produced for non-military operations.
The significance of the Bell 47 went beyond simply being the first certified civil helicopter. And nearly eight decades later, that legacy continues to be visible in the many roles helicopters perform every day.
