Exciting news! President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will officially commission the upgraded West Africa Container Terminal (WACT) in Onne, Rivers State, next Wednesday. Operated by APM Terminals, WACT is Nigeria’s largest and most efficient container terminal outside of Lagos. The $115 million upgrade, which began in 2021, is a major milestone for Nigerian ports.

WACT’s Managing Director, Jeethu Jose, emphasized the significance of this achievement, calling it a game-changer for Nigeria’s port infrastructure. As Nigeria’s first greenfield container terminal developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, WACT is strategically located within the Oil and Gas Free Zone in Onne, serving as a crucial gateway to Eastern Nigeria’s economy and beyond.

The commissioning ceremony will be attended by several dignitaries, including Governors, Ministers, and top officials from various government agencies and industry leaders. Stay tuned for more updates!

Customs Modernisation: Driver Of Economic Growth
By Okezie Nnadi
There are many benefits that will accrue to Nigeria, as a nation, by the time the Customs Modernisation Project, CMP, is fully implemented, Mr. Ahmed Ogunshola, has said.

Ogunshola, General Manager of the Trade Modernisation Project, TMP, disclosed this to newsmen during a media tour of the Project Management Office of the Nigeria Customs Service Trade Modernisation Project.
He explained that CMP is the automation of the business processes of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).
This is to simplify and enhance the experience of stakeholdersin the trade value chain, making it easy to obtain import and export clearances, pay duties and obtain the release of goods.

The major advantage of the project is the significant growth in the revenue profile of the Federal Government. The project will generate in excess of $250 billion to the Federal Government over the life of the concession
Equally, the project will bring Nigeria at par with the rest of the world, in terms of deploying technology to facilitate international trade.
“Furthermore, the project will give the economic diversification agenda of the Federal Government a huge boost, by providing further ease of cross-border trading”.
“Just to add, by the time the project is fully implemented, it will cover all areas of customs activities, including duties collection, clearance operations and suppression of smuggling”.
In his remarks, CSC Abdullahi Maiwada, the spokesperson of the Nigeria Customs, said the essence of the tour was to update the media and general public on the CMP, which began some years ago, in order to boost trade facilitation in the country.

We at Cimal look forward to the benefits that will accrue to Nigeria, as a nation, by the time the Customs Modernisation Project, CMP, is fully implemented.

NCS Flags- off Health Insurance Scheme, Sensitise Officers on Effective Healthcare Delivery

The Nigeria Customs Service on Monday, 20 May 2024 flagged off a sensitisation programme with Songhai Health Trust to sensitise officers on the benefits of accessing the National Health Insurance Scheme.

During the flag-off Sensitisation Programme with the National Health Insurance Authority and Songhai Health Trust Ltd at the Nigeria Customs Service Headquarters in Abuja, the Comptroller-General of Customs, represented by the Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs in Charge of Human Resource Development, DCG Greg Itotoh, declared that the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) is a means of offering officers high-quality healthcare.

The Customs boss, while speaking, outlined that the sensitisation is to enlighten officers on how best to derive maximum benefits from the services provided by the Songhai Health Trust. “This is a way of providing quality health care services to officers that are affordable and stress-free. It is an insurance program that NCS makes mandatory contributions.

“This is the reason why we want every officer to key into it and make best use of the incentives provided by the government because whether we make use of it or not, Nigeria Customs Service pays, and that is why we don’t want to be wasting that money” he stated.

For us at CIMAL, this is a welcome development and we appreciate the efforts of the Comptroller General of Customs in prioritizing the welfare of her officers. We call on all officers of the Service to avail themselves of this wonderful opportunity.
