Yesterday, the world marked the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem.

As we reflect on the importance of this day, we are reminded that Nigeria is home to the largest mangrove ecosystem in Africa and the third largest in the world. Yet these invaluable ecosystems are disappearing at an alarming rate.

Mangroves are our natural defence against coastal flooding and erosion.

They support biodiversity, sustain fisheries, store vast amounts of carbon, and provide livelihoods for millions of people. Their continued degradation means greater flood risks, declining fish stocks, and increased vulnerability for coastal communities.

At SRADeV Nigeria, we renew our call for urgent action to protect our mangrove ecosystems through stronger enforcement of environmental regulations, effective monitoring, the implementation of the National Wetland Policy, and enhanced protection of our wetlands.
Protecting mangroves is not only about conserving nature, it is about strengthening climate resilience, ensuring food security, and building a safer, more sustainable future for Nigeria’s coastal communities.
