In the Netherlands, you can cycle for years without ever seeing a STOP sign on a bike path.

Dutch traffic engineers prefer give-way markings (haaientanden) so cyclists never lose their hard-earned momentum. But this single stretch of path has two of the rarest, high-stakes crossings back-to-back:

1. A literal STOP sign at a car intersection (obeyed by exactly 0% of riders)[span_0](start_span)[span_0](end_span).
2. An open railway crossing marked only by an Andreaskruis, zero barriers, and tram tracks[span_1](start_span)[span_1](end_span).

To anyone outside the Netherlands, blowing past both without putting a foot down looks reckless. To Dutch commuters, slowing down when the line of sight is clear is practically a crime against momentum.

Who’s in the right here: the traffic law on the post, or the unwritten law of Dutch cycling flow? Drop your take below! 👇🇳🇱🚲

In most countries, doing this on a bicycle will get you honked at, screamed at, or run off the road. 🚗💥

In the Netherlands? It’s protected by law. 🚲🇳🇱

Under Dutch traffic regulations (Artikel 3 RVV 1990), cyclists are legally entitled to ride side-by-side (“naast elkaar fietsen”). Commuters chat about their day, parents ride next to their kids, and friends catch up on the way to work.

Drivers don’t honk in rage, because roads are engineered with dedicated cycle superhighways and separate lanes so everyone has their own space.

When you build for human connection instead of car dominance, the whole vibe of a city changes.

Be honest: Would drivers in your city tolerate this, or would it cause road rage? Drop your city below! 👇🚲

Unpopular opinion: Spending €150+ on a private luxury dinner cruise in Paris is a complete waste of money. 🇫🇷💸

The standard 1-hour Seine boat costs around €15, and you get the exact same multi-million-euro backdrop:

🏛️ Floating inches from the Musée d’Orsay (originally built as an ornate railway station for the 1900 World’s Fair, which explains the massive illuminated station clock).
🌉 Gliding beneath centuries-old stone bridges.
🚢 Watching vintage paddle steamers churn past moody Parisian skies.

The only real difference? You aren’t trapped eating mediocre pre-heated steak while trying to take photos through a window.

Be honest: Would you rather do the €15 budget cruise or splurge €150+ for dinner on the water? 👇🥖

A multi-million-euro underground garage in Amsterdam, and not a single car in sight...

Commuting into Amsterdam Zuid? Instead of cluttering the sidewalks with thousands of bicycles, they built this subterranean garage at Strawinskylaan:
🔹Thousands of double-decker parking spots
🔹First 24 hours 100% free with your public transport card
🔹A dedicated flat escalator (travelator) that brings
you and your bike straight back up to street level
This is what happens when cycling is engineered as primary public transit, not an afterthought.

Drop your thoughts below: Would free, indoor bike garages like this convince you to cycle to work?👇🚲

…and once you see the psychology at play, it’s pure genius.

Most countries paint a solid or dashed white line down the center to divide traffic. Here on Dutch rural roads (erftoegangswegen), that center line is deliberately erased.

Instead, the only painted lanes belong to bicycles on the edges (suggestiestroken).

Why? Pure behavioural engineering.

When drivers see an open car lane with a center line, they unconsciously feel safe driving at 60–80 km/h. But when you take away the middle divider and leave only a tight strip between two red bike tracks, the asphalt suddenly feels dangerously narrow.

The result? Drivers naturally get cautious, stay dead center, and take their foot off the gas without needing a single speed sign or radar trap.

When two cars meet, they have to navigate the squeeze together—temporarily yielding onto the bicycle strip only when it’s completely clear of bikes.

Could psychological road design like this ever work in your home country, or would drivers completely ignore the bikes? Let’s hear it below! 👇
