This opportunity only happens again in 40 years! For the first time since 1984, the Kröller-Müller Museum is hanging every Van Gogh painting it owns. All 88 of them, in a museum in the middle of a forest, from 15 September to 3 January.
The curators built the show around three words, faith, hope and love, the subject of the sermon Van Gogh gave in 1876, years before he picked up a brush. It is a quietly brilliant way to read a life that only lasted 37 years and only painted for ten.
We have been taking travellers to Otterlo since the beginning. The museum is one of the institutions we work with most closely in the Netherlands, and one of the first places our new Storykeepers are taken. For the exhibition window we are building full days from Amsterdam and The Hague, with a private visit to the wartime art bunker after the galleries, and adding the museum to countryside itineraries along the IJssel. It pairs well with De Haar Castle, Paleis Het Loo and the Rietveld Schröder House in Utrecht.

What a year for art lovers in the Netherlands!

Kusama at the Stedelijk, Whistler at the Van Gogh Museum. Twenty five masterpieces from the Thyssen Bornemisza at the Mauritshuis. Hals and Rembrandt side by side in Haarlem. Signac in Rotterdam. Every Van Gogh the Kröller Müller owns, on one set of walls.

And then, in October, the Rijksmuseum opens Willem de Kooning at Work. A hundred years after a 22 year old from working class Rotterdam hid on a British freighter with no visa, no plan and almost no English, the country he left is finally calling him home.

“I have spent the last weeks preparing the training for our Storykeepers, who will be introducing the show to our clients this winter, and the more I read, the less it feels like an exhibition and the more it feels like a novel. A bar in New York where de Kooning, Po***ck, Rothko and Krasner invented the first American art movement almost by accident. A rivalry de Kooning settled in one sentence, then moved to Po***ck’s stretch of Long Island anyway. A CIA that quietly sent these canvases around the world as proof of a free society. And a quay in Rotterdam where his bronzes now stand, exactly where he boarded the ship in 1926.”

Our co-founder has been a fan of Yayoi Kusama for years, and her work has physically stopped him in place more than once, in more than one country. This week he shared an emotional tribute to the artist, written while training our guides here in Amsterdam ahead of her retrospective at the Stedelijk, running from September 12th, 2026 to January 17th, 2027.

Kusama passed away this August, at 97, just weeks before the museum was set to unveil seventy years of her work, and the training turned into something closer to a eulogy than a briefing.

We build our guides differently. Beyond art history and contemporary art knowledge, this training pulled in philosophy and semiotics, from Byung Chul Han's writing on beauty and reflection to a closer reading of the mirror itself as a symbol, so our guides can offer our guests a story, not just a timeline.

I went back to Iceland to check things in person: our office in Reykjavík, the guides we work with, and every new property and activity we’re adding for this year’s aurora season.

It’s the same principle that’s kept this island’s culture alive for a thousand years. Icelanders never built monuments to hold their history. They built sagas, carried by voice, retold by the person standing in front of you. Nothing here was ever meant to be filed away and trusted blind, it was meant to be checked, passed on, kept current.

So that’s what nine days did: new hotels and experiences scouted and approved, hours with the guides who’ll be leading your clients under the lights this winter, and a clearer read on what actually delivers versus what just photographs well.

The aurora doesn’t perform on schedule. But this year, it’s putting on a show worth chasing across four countries.

From Iceland’s Troll Peninsula, reachable only by super jeep, no shortcuts allowed, to Swedish Lapland, where the hotel shape, shifts with the seasons. From Tromsø, where Amundsen once trained for the Arctic (now a direct flight from Amsterdam, no dog sled required), to Saariselkä, where the choice is quiet spa luxury or a glass-ceilinged igloo.

The timing isn’t incidental: we’re near the peak of the sun’s 11-year cycle, meaning stronger auroras than we’ve seen in over a decade.

One of the things we love most about the Netherlands is how quietly it rewards curiosity. Here is one of our favorites, set in Haarlem, a graceful 15 minutes from Amsterdam.

The opened its doors in 1778, making it the oldest museum in the country. Inside, time softens. Conceived during the Enlightenment, it was never meant to dazzle, but to invite thinking: art beside science, fossils beside drawings, questions beside answers.

Master drawings by Rembrandt and Michelangelo appear without fanfare, as if you’ve stumbled into a private study rather than a museum. And the best part? There are no blockbuster crowds here. No rush. Just the pleasure of discovery unfolding at its own pace.
