The visual difference from the later generation is the DAF lettering and its positioning, and the placement of the truck model on the grille. This can be seen on De Hart 's 2800, where "2800 Turbo" is displayed on the grille. The omitted windows in the sleeper cabin section are also a feature to identify a later generation 2800.

In September 1973, the DAF 2800 was introduced at the IAA in Germany, which coincided with the introduction of the new F241 cab, which was produced until the mid-1990s.

The DAF 2800 had the first European intercooled turbo diesel, namely the 11.6 liter DKS engine and produced 320 HP and 1260 Nm. Other engine choices included the turbocharged 280 hp DKTD and the 250 hp DKA. 12 or 16 speed gearboxes were offered by ZF, or Fuller with 13 speeds.
To comply with regulations in Italy that set a lower horsepower limit per GCWR at 44 tons, the power of the exceptional 2800 DKSI was increased in 1977 to 353 hp and 1410 Nm. This special 2800 was only sold in Italy and was delivered until the arrival of the ATi engines in 1985.
