In 2021, we focused on reducing our carbon footprint by investing in more sustainable transportation methods and promoting a circular economy. We also worked on increasing our use of renewable energy and reducing water usage in our operations. It has been an important milestone in our commitment to a sustainable future, and we are proud of the progress we have made towards our goals.

As we prepare to launch our sustainability report for 2022, we are excited to share the progress we have made since last year. Our commitment to sustainability remains unwavering, and we continue to work towards achieving our goals of reducing our environmental impact and contributing to a more sustainable future for all. 🌱

Packaging made from natural materials such as cardboard does not necessarily equal the most sustainable option. In fact, reusable plastic containers help reduce a whopping 60% more CO2 than cardboard boxes!

This is the conclusion of an extensive European study commissioned by the German organisation Stiftung Initiative Mehrweg. This study can help companies in the fresh food supply chain make well-founded choices to reduce their carbon footprint.

Every year Danish retailer REMA 1000 uses around 16 million green folding trays for transporting fresh fruit and vegetables to their 300+ stores around Denmark.

In December 2020, EPS and REMA 1000 opened a 15000 m2 washing facility to ensure the millions of trays can be washed and returned to REMA's supply chain fast and efficiently.

💬Ole Thomsen, Director of Logistics at REMA1000: “Naturally, it makes more sense to have our service provider on our own grounds instead of transporting the trays back and forth through Europe”.

Since 2019, long-time partner and international retailer Kaufland has been working with our Smart Return Logistics service.

This means that their returnable packaging is handed over to Euro Pool System unsorted. To ensure a transparent return chain, all reusable boxes are additionally equipped with a QR code. Smart Return Logistics not only supports traceability, but also relieves the employees of Kaufland by eliminating sorting.

Polish supermarket Netto sought a solution to fight food waste and reduce its CO2 emissions. Teaming up with Euro Pool System, they have been able to reduce up to 40% of CO2.
