As we get closer to our 110th birthday, we’re looking back at how Schiphol has changed over the years 🎂✈️

This week, we’re stepping inside the airport.

In 1928, Schiphol opened its first central terminal building, just in time for the Olympic Games in Amsterdam. Travellers bought their tickets at the counter and checked their flight times on a large chalkboard, updated by hand.

But even back then, there was more to Schiphol than catching a flight. Travellers and visitors could stop for something to eat or drink, and over the decades, shops, restaurants and lounges became an increasingly bigger part of the airport.

The way travellers found their flight changed too; from handwritten chalkboards to Schiphol’s iconic split-flap departure board and eventually to the digital screens we know today.

De Buitenveldertbaan is van maandag 31 augustus tot en met dinsdag 8 september niet inzetbaar voor vliegverkeer vanwege onderhoud. Op 5 en 6 september is de baan wel beschikbaar. Tijdens het onderhoud maakt het vliegverkeer gebruik van de andere banen. Lees meer:

As we get closer to our 110th birthday, we’re looking back at how it all began 🎂 Each week, we revisit a different moment from Schiphol’s past. This week: where it all started.

Long before the first aircraft landed here, there wasn’t even land. The Haarlemmermeer lake was reclaimed from the water in 1852, creating the polder that would eventually become home to Schiphol. 64 years later, in 1916, the first military aircraft landed in a field in that same polder. It marked the beginning of Schiphol.

Since then, a lot has changed. From a military airfield in the Haarlemmermeer polder to an international airport connecting the Netherlands with the rest of the world ✈️❤️

We’re counting down to our 110th birthday! 🎂 And a lot can change in 110 years…

Every week, we’re diving into the archives to see how familiar places at Schiphol have changed over time. First up: the Panorama Terrace!

Did you know plane spotting at Schiphol has been a popular day out since the 1930s? Back then, people would cycle to the airport or visit on organised bus trips to watch the planes, and even buy a ticket to do so 🚲 Fun fact: for a long time, Schiphol earned more from visitors coming to watch the planes than from aviation itself!

The Panorama Terrace has changed location over the years, but the fascination with watching planes has definitely remained.
