Nearshoring is no longer only a production decision. For many European businesses, it has become a logistics strategy. The basic idea is simple: instead of relying only on long-distance supply chains from Asia or other distant regions, companies move part of their production, suppliers, assembly, or warehousing closer to their main markets.

Rail freight has a strong environmental argument in Europe, but that alone has not been enough to make it the first choice for many shippers. In practice, companies often choose road transport because it is faster to organize, easier to track, more flexible for door-to-door delivery, and usually more predictable when a shipment must arrive within a narrow time window. One of the less visible reasons is still hidden in the daily operation of freight trains: in much of Europe, wagons are still coupled manually with screw couplers, a system that has remained largely unchanged for more than a century./

In European road freight, distance is only the visible part of transit time. A route that looks simple on a map can become slow because of roadworks, weekend truck bans, border procedures, port congestion, bridge limits, lack of parking, winter conditions, or traffic around industrial cities. This is why experienced carriers and forwarders do not judge a route only by kilometres. They judge it by reliability.

In Europe, the move toward electronic transport documents is no longer just a matter of convenience. Regulation, software readiness, and day-to-day business pressure are all pushing the market toward less paper and more automation. This shift does not concern only large multinationals. It also affects carriers, freight forwarders, warehouses, and traders that handle CMR notes, delivery proofs, invoices, warehouse records, and customs data every day.

Customs compliance in 2026 is no longer a back-office issue that can be fixed after a truck is loaded or a shipment is already moving. It has become an operational risk that affects transit time, border performance, delivery reliability and margin. That shift is not theoretical. The EU’s customs environment is becoming more data-driven and more centralised, while trade volumes keep rising.

An importer that once compared ocean freight offers mainly by base rate and transit time may now open a quotation and find a very different picture: a separate emissions surcharge, references to EU ETS, another line linked to FuelEU Maritime, and contract language that was not there a year or two ago. That shift matters because maritime decarbonisation in Europe is no longer a distant policy issue. It is already affecting freight budgets, carrier negotiations, route economics, and port choices.

A European manufacturer or importer that used to work with fairly stable transport budgets can now face a very different reality. Freight offers are updated more often, fuel surcharge lines appear or change from one week to the next, transit times become less predictable, and the final transport price is harder to model with confidence. That is not just because diesel is more expensive.

Warehouses today are under growing pressure to handle a more complex mix of orders, including retail replenishment, e-commerce parcels, marketplace sales, and returns, often within the same operation. This shift is closely tied to the continued growth of online shopping in Europe, where 78 percent of internet users bought goods or services online in 2025, up from 62 percent in 2015.

When a production line is down, an energy project is slipping into penalty territory, or an aircraft is AOG, air freight is not the expensive option – it is often the cheapest way to stop a much bigger loss. In aviation, AOG means Aircraft on Ground, a situation where an aircraft cannot fly because of a technical issue, and that is exactly why urgent spares move with top priority.

When a truck is late, the invoice is late, the warehouse plan slips, and production starts improvising. Road still carries a big slice of Europe’s freight performance – in 2023 it accounted for about 25.3% of total EU freight transport (tonne-km), with roughly 1,807 billion tonne-km attributed to road in that modal-split view.
