NANTES, RENNES, PARIS 🚊🚇🚄

In April, I travelled flight free to Rennes and back. I used the trams in Nantes, using this team/train interchange at Haluchere-Batignolles and a TGV...

Rennes has beautiful Wisteria, but more importantly, a great new metro with well integrated stations

Stopped by some churches and graves in Paris: Notre Dame, St Sulpice, Samuel Beckett, Oscar Wilde...

We enjoyed happy hour, and also the parks of Luxembourg and Buttes-Chaumont, which also offers views of Montmartre and is well linked by metro!

LILLE, WAMBRECHIES, & TRAINS BETWEEN BELGIUM/FRANCE 🇧🇪🇫🇷

Back on 1st April (get your Poisson d'Avrils ready, Francophones), I travelled via Maastricht to Lille and Wambrechies. The latter is a town along a large canal, once independent and now swallowed by the Lille conurbation/agglomération

Changing multiple times, the price was pretty good (€18 from Maastricht) but it did take quite a while. Most notably, the cross border train from Tournoi to Lille Flandres was slower and delayed

That said, Lille is a lovely city! I always thought northern France was the country's most boring corner, essentially Southern England with menus in French, but thankfully its much better than that!

Lille has a metro - a light metro similar to Rennes, but older in a way which means the cars are even smaller. It works, and there are some trams, but the team frequency seems very poor... 🚇

Big bonus, however, the buses are some of the best I've seen in France. Frequent, easy to understand, and well integrated with the metro 👍

Wambrechies has a lovely canalside, with a beautiful mairie and bakery with local chocolates (Le Palet d'Or), and the architecture in the centre of Lille is amazing! Some great bike lanes being put in, and an impressive town hall which is surprisingly modern and reflects the style of Ghent, not far away in Flanders...

The TGV connections must be unparalleled for a city caught between Britain, France, and Benelux. Local cross border services, and local stuff across Northern France, plus (when you include Lille Europe) TGVs all over France

An incredibly useful spot for flight free travellers on NW Europe - ideal for changing trains and taking a break ❤️

FLIGHT-FREE to NORWAY 🇳🇱🇩🇰🇳🇴🚄⛴️

This summer, I went to Norway for the first time, and I took the journey there flight free. From NL, this meant:

1. Local NS train to Roermond
2. FlixBus to Düsseldorf
3. Deutsche Bahn ICE Düsseldorf to Hamburg

*Hostel, A&O, wouldn't recommend*

4. České dráhy RJ Hamburg Altona to Middelfart
5. DSB | Tog | Rejs med Middelfart to Aarhus
6. Aarhus to Viborg... Then Hørdum... Then Thisted
7. Thisted to Aalborg with local buses
8. Trains X2 Aalborg to Hirtshals

9. Color Line ferry to Kristiansand

Including lunch on a train, camping, old streets, cheap Normal coffee, and an easy change to the train at Kristiansand...

Amsterdam -> Newcastle 🇳🇱🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿⛴️
Flight free with
Late January - €132 for two people
(double bed cabin, not incl. bus transfers)

The waves were no issue when lying down in the cabin, which was very comfy! Shops onboard were bigger than Stena Line ferries, with ok cafes/bars

Very relaxing, good deal - except the bus transfers are expensive, and peak season sees fares soar!

Surprised how un-freezing it was on deck in the morning! But the was no joke

Food and drink from , .eggsgobao , &

St Andrews graveyard, the Swing Bridge... Before heading to Durham for the castle/cathedral

After a night bus to Paris, I got on a TGV straight to the border town of Hendaye. from there, the Euskotren goes over the border, straight into downtown Donostia

What a wonderful place to be, lunch on the beach in the city centre, no flights required!

HELSINKI AND LAHTI ⛵🇫🇮🌇

Finland in the summer has long evening sun, manageable warm weather, great food, lakes... and you can get around really well by train within many parts of the country

Lahti is an easy day trip out from Helsinki, a town located at the lower end of one of Finland's largest lakes - and home to Teerenpeli Distillery
