After travelling to 100+ countries together, this is STILL one of our favourite bucket list moments… 🇵🇪❤️

Walking through the Sun Gate after four days on the Inca Trail and seeing Machu Picchu for the first time is something we’ll never forget. We spent 4 days hiking the Inca Trail, crossing mountain passes, walking through cloud forest and exploring Inca ruins before finally arriving at Machu Picchu.

After building it up in our heads for years, somehow it was even better than we imagined.

If Machu Picchu is on your bucket list, a few things we’d recommend:

🥾 If you can, hike the Inca Trail — arriving on foot made it so much more special for us.
📅 Book months ahead — permits and the most popular Machu Picchu circuits can sell out.
☀️ May–September is generally driest, but also busiest.
🚂 Don’t want to trek? Take the train via Ollantaytambo and consider staying overnight in Aguas Calientes.
🗺️ Research your circuit before booking — different tickets give you access to different parts of Machu Picchu.
⚠️ And remember: the Inca Trail closes every February for maintenance, although Machu Picchu itself remains open.

Having now visited all 7 New Wonders of the World, this ultimately took our #1 spot.

💬 Comment “PLAN” if you’re planning Machu Picchu and we’ll send you our essential tips.l

We LOVE a bucket-list hike, but after years of planning trips around mountains and trails, we’ve realised some of our favourites have been the ones we knew almost nothing about beforehand.

The random trail we found while road tripping.
The hike recommended by someone we met.
The place we’d never even heard of until we started planning the trip.

And some of them have genuinely rivalled the “iconic” hikes we travelled halfway around the world to do.

So we’ve pulled together 9 hikes we think deserve a lot more attention, from easy coastal trails to high-altitude adventures — with the distance, elevation, time and our own difficulty + views ratings to help you decide which ones are worth adding to your list.

🥾 How many of these had you heard of before this post?

Save this for your future hiking adventures & send it to the person who’d happily spend their holiday walking uphill with you 😂

We’ve hiked in some incredible places around the world, but nothing has come close to spending the night on Acatenango, watching Volcán de Fuego erupt every 15–20 minutes 🔥

As the sun sets, the explosions become even more dramatic. You sit there watching lava light up the night sky while the rumble echoes across the valley. It’s one of those travel moments that genuinely doesn’t feel real.

The hike itself isn’t easy. You’ll climb around 1,500m of elevation to reach base camp, then, if you’ve still got something left in the tank, tackle the optional Fuego viewpoint hike. It’s steep, exposed and tough after a long day… but it’s also the moment that takes this experience from incredible to unforgettable.

A few tips we’d give anyone planning it:
🥾 Don’t skip the Fuego viewpoint hike if conditions allow—it’s a highlight of the whole experience.
🧥 Pack warm layers. You’ll be hot on the climb up but freezing once the sun goes down.
💧 Carry plenty of water and snacks for the ascent.
📅 Visit in the dry season (November–April) for your best chance of clear views.

We’d happily climb Acatenango again tomorrow.

Having now visited all seven, our biggest takeaway is that when and how you visit can make a huge difference to whether these places actually live up to the hype.

A few things we’d recommend:
⏰ Go early whenever you can. The Taj Mahal and Chichen Itza were completely different experiences before the main crowds arrived.
🇨🇳 Research which part of the Great Wall you visit. We chose a quieter section and it became one of our favourite experiences of all seven.
🥾 Consider making the journey part of the experience. If you have the time and budget, arriving at Machu Picchu via the 4-day Inca Trail made it infinitely more memorable for us.
🇯🇴 Give Petra longer than you think. It’s an enormous archaeological site rather than simply the Treasury. We’d allow at least one full day — ideally more if you want to hike.
🎟️ Book the headline experiences early. Machu Picchu circuits, the Inca Trail and some Colosseum tickets can sell out well ahead of time.
☀️ Don’t underestimate weather and seasonality. Cloud can completely obscure Christ the Redeemer, midday heat can make several of these much harder work, and peak-season crowds can dramatically change the experience.
📅 Check closure days before building your itinerary. The Taj Mahal closes every Friday and the Inca Trail closes throughout February.

And finally: don’t expect “Wonder of the World” to automatically mean it’ll be your favourite place in that country. Some absolutely blew us away, while others were more about appreciating their history and significance.

You don’t need to spend days trekking or climb to extreme altitudes for a hike to be unforgettable. Some of our favourite trails around the world have taken just a couple of hours — others have involved 12-hour days, 5,000m altitude and some very tired legs. 😂

These 9 are all completely different, but every one gave us a reason to recommend it:

🇵🇹 PR1, Madeira — probably the most dramatic ridgeline hike we’ve done
🇳🇴 Trolltunga, Norway — a BIG day out, but that final viewpoint is worth every kilometre
🇵🇪 Red Valley, Peru — otherworldly scenery beyond Rainbow Mountain, with a fraction of the crowds
🇺🇸 Navajo Loop & Queen’s Garden, Utah — one of the best effort-to-reward hikes on this list
🇰🇿 Big Almaty Lake, Kazakhstan — turquoise water surrounded by the enormous peaks of the Tian Shan
🇱🇰 Sigiriya Rock, Sri Lanka — more than 1,000 steps leading to an ancient fortress and incredible views
🇬🇧 Seven Sisters, England — proof you don’t need to leave the UK for a spectacular coastal hike
🇺🇸 Moro Rock, California — short, steep and absolutely brilliant for sunset
🇵🇹 PR8, Madeira — rugged volcanic coastline and a completely different side of the island

6 iconic road trips that you need to do at least once in your life… 🚗🌍

(Follow Elle James & Ben James | The Postcard Dream for more bucket list travel inspiration from 100+ countries 🌍)

We’ve driven some incredible roads around the world, but these six are the ones we’d genuinely plan an entire trip around.

🏔️ Norway — our ultimate road trip for sheer scale and adventure
🏜️ Utah’s Mighty 5 — possibly the best concentration of epic scenery anywhere we’ve driven
🧊 Iceland’s Route 1 — waterfalls, glaciers, volcanoes and black-sand beaches
🏔️ Canadian Rockies — turquoise lakes, glaciers and ridiculously scenic roads
⛰️ The Dolomites — world-class hiking with some of Europe’s most dramatic mountain scenery
🌊 Great Ocean Road — coastline, wildlife, rainforest and the perfect addition to an Australia trip

Our biggest road-trip tip? Don’t rush them. The places we remember most are often the unplanned viewpoints, hikes and detours between the famous stops — not just the destinations themselves 🥰
