Don’t feed the whales
Through his work as Chief Advisor on board fishing vessels in the Southern Ocean for two decades, Omar Sørvik experienced a growing problem that required new innovations to uphold an economic- and sustainable sound operation.
One of the greatest challenges for commercial longlining is a phenonomen called whale depredation. When hauling the long line, the catch is exposed, making it an easy target for whales and other marine mammals. This behavior first started in the 1990’s. In effected areas, more than 70 % of the catch is eaten by whales.
Omar first thought of a new method to avoid whale depredation back in 2009. The years went by, and in 2016 he started Sago Solutions AS together with his family. The main goal was to finish, test and commercialize our solution; Sago Extreme.
Sago Extreme is a patented solution designed to secure the catch at seabed, making it unavailable for depredation and eliminates the risk of loosing catch due to sudden movements when hauling.
