21-year-old Sherpa climber Phura Gyaljen Sherpa has died near Camp III on Mount Everest, taking this season’s Everest death toll to three.
Originally from Thame, Solukhumbu, Phura Gyaljen reportedly fell below Camp III on the Lhotse Face while carrying loads in preparation for summit expeditions, according to Department of Tourism, Nepal.
He was the grandson of legendary mountaineer Ang Rita Sherpa, the famed “Snow Leopard,” who summited Everest ten times without supplemental oxygen and remains the only climber to achieve a winter Everest ascent without oxygen.
