Today marks 35 years of independence for Uzbekistan.

For travellers, days like this are a good reminder that the places we visit are much more than the monuments we came to photograph. Beyond Samarkand’s blue tiles, Bukhara’s old streets and Khiva’s walls is a living country with its own stories, celebrations and sense of identity.

Uzbekistan’s Silk Road cities have a way of making centuries of history feel remarkably close. A beautiful day to put this part of Central Asia back on the travel list.

There are places that make you reach for your camera straight away. Namibia feels more like the kind of place that makes you stop first.

It’s the scale of it.

Red dunes rising out of the desert at Sossusvlei. The almost-surreal stillness of Deadvlei. A coastline where sand eventually gives way to the Atlantic, then days later, the completely different landscape of Etosha where the next thing to catch your eye might be an elephant, giraffe or something moving quietly across the plains.

And then there are the spaces in between.

Long roads disappearing towards the horizon. Huge skies. Desert light changing everything as the sun moves lower. The feeling that, for a little while, there’s very little around you except the landscape itself.

Namibia isn’t somewhere that needs much embellishment. It already looks slightly unbelievable.
