Bike Sunnynook: Have your say on the Auckland Annual Plan to help shape our community for the best!

Thanks to Bike Auckland for getting the ideas going!

For people who ride bikes, having your say on Auckland Council's Annual Plan is really important.

It's our opportunity to let Council know how many of us want to be able to get around safely by bike, and how important it is that Auckland improves its bike infrastructure.

Our submission guide makes it easy to complete your submission quickly, without missing the important stuff 👍

𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞? If you do nothing else, these are the key points to include:

4️⃣ In question 4, Other comments on the Annual Plan:

- If you would like to see Council invest in and deliver more fast and affordable safe cycleways, to create a connected cycling network, mention it here.
- Mention any specific projects or routes you’d really like to see completed (see our list for inspiration!).
- If you support active transport for climate-related reasons, you could mention your support for Auckland meeting its climate change commitments by helping people get around by low-emission transport.

6️⃣ In question 6, City Centre:

- If you would like Queen Street to remain free of cars, including during evenings, mention it here.
You could also mention that Queen Street’s Waihorotiu Path was extensively consulted on and approved by the Governing Body, and shouldn’t be changed by the wishes of a minority without consultation. (More detail on the link.)

Time to give feedback on some new rules that affect cyclists!

Time to give feedback on some new rules that affect cyclists!

We’d like your feedback on 5 proposed changes to the road user rules. Here are the changes:

All the proposed changes are to do with how we use lanes. The changes will better align the rules with how people already travel, making our everyday use of the roads, cycle lanes, and footpaths clearer and safer for everyone. The 5 proposals are:

• allow children 12 years and under to ride bikes on footpaths
• set a minimum passing gap for when drivers pass other types of road users, including people cycling, and riding horses (a minimum gap of 1 metre at speeds of 60km/h or less, and 1.5 metres above 60km/h)
• allow people to ride e-scooters in cycle lanes
• require drivers to give way to buses leaving bus stops
• clarify signage requirements for enforcing berm parking restrictions (the grassy area between a road and a footpath).

Share your feedback with us using the form on our website: https://www.nzta.govt.nz/laneuse

Read the page on our website before filling out the form – there’s a lot more information there than what’s above.

Our consultation closes on 25 March 2026. We can’t include comments on this post or messages to us on social media as submissions – you need to use the form on our website if you want us to use your feedback.

Your feedback will inform the decisions made by the Minister of Transport about these changes.
