The Indonesian archipelago is a world of extraordinary landscapes, ancient cultures and traditions shaped by the sea.
Set sail from Flores aboard a traditional Indonesian pinisi boat and head east, into an archipelago of volcanic islands, remote villages and remarkably untouched reefs.
There are no big-city attractions here. Instead, your days might mean snorkelling over vibrant coral, meeting villagers on islands where fishing and farming still shape everyday life, watching traditional dances, discovering centuries-old weaving techniques or simply swimming from a deserted beach.
Then comes the Banda Archipelago, once at the centre of a fierce European struggle for control of the world's spice trade, these remote islands are still surrounded by volcanic peaks, nutmeg plantations, old Dutch forts and clear tropical waters. Walk through the markets, meet local plantation farmers and, if you're lucky, watch the rare Mandarin fish appear on the reef at dusk.
And somewhere between the islands, there is the possibility of seeing seabirds circling overhead or whales on the horizon.
