“Things our clients teach us”

Do you know what it means when a cat washes behind his ears? 🐱

According to an old piece of folklore, it could mean rain is on the way! 🌧️

🐾 The Old Wives’ Tale, for centuries, sailors, farmers and folklore traditions across Europe and America have claimed that when a cat washes behind its ears, it’s a sign that rain or a storm is coming.

🐾 But is there any science behind it?
Cats have incredibly sensitive ears and sophisticated balance systems. One theory is that changes in atmospheric pressure before a storm might cause subtle changes in how a cat feels, prompting extra grooming around the ears.
There isn’t strong scientific evidence that cats can actually predict the weather, though!
So next time you see a cat having a particularly thorough wash behind the ears… 🌧️
Maybe they know something we don’t

Part Two in our series: “Things Our Clients Teach Us”

🐴 Do you know what “Shank’s Pony” is?

Shank’s Pony is an old British, Australian and Commonwealth expression meaning to travel on foot, to walk.

So, if you miss the bus, your car breaks down, or you simply decide to leave the car at home, you might find yourself relying on Shank’s Pony to get you where you need to go! 😂

But where does the expression come from? our darling client Margaret shares these words of wisdoms with me and I found this when I looked it up:

The word “shank” refers to the lower part of the leg — your shin. The phrase humorously imagines your own two legs as the “pony” you ride to get from A to B.

🇺🇸 In the United States and Canada 🇨🇦 you’re more likely to hear the similar expression “Shank’s Mare.”

It’s one of those wonderful old sayings that reminds us how much language, stories and wisdom are passed down through generations — and, of course, how much our clients teach us along the way. ❤️

Happy New Zealand Grandparents Day!

Whether Grandparents by blood or Grandparents by love, we celebrate these special people today 💙
For those that have Grandparents in their lives, visit them if you can and give them a big kiss and hug, or give them a call...tell them that you love them! 🥰

Driving Miss Daisy would like to wish all the Grandparents of New Zealand a truly wonderful day. We appreciate all the strength, guidance and love that you give.

No one told me the absolute joy I would feel watching my parents become Grandparents. Ma n Pa Daisy really stepped up into the role of grandparents and we are eternally grateful for them 💕

Our very own Frances and Julie are both Grandmothers. Julie is Granny to 4 and Frances is Nannie Frannie to Sophia, happy Grandparents day to you both 🥰

For the first episode in our new series:

“Things our Clients teach us”

Do you know the meaning of the saying - It’s snowing down South? (It has nothing to do with snow).

Our 94 year old Client Betty, shared this little gem in the car on the way to our knitting group.

In the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s, if someone said to you “It’s snowing down South” it meant that your petticoat or slip is showing.

A rather charming and much more subtle way of saying:

“Your underwear is showing!” 😄

Language is full of expressions like this that can disappear from everyday use, but our clients remember them

What do you do when you’re retired?

🌸Margaret has the answers! 🌸

After a busy week of:

🍎 Monday: Fruit & Veg and Bread shopping
☕ Tuesday: Latte & A Laugh at Luke’s

Thursday is Margaret’s day! ✨

Once a month, Margaret gets to choose where she wants to go and what she wants to do. And that’s where the fun really begins!
There’s always excitement arriving at Margaret’s house, wondering where are we going today? 🚗💨
We have a “To Do” list, a list of the places we’ve been, and a list of the things we’ve enjoyed so much that we want to do them again!

So come along and join us on our adventures all over the City of Sails! 🌊⛵️

Who says retirement is boring? Not Margaret! 😄🌸
