You may have heard about the govt's plans to introduce universal RUC, replacing petrol tax for some 3.5m vehicles. It would make NZ just the second country after Iceland to introduce a universal RUC, but there is a lot of work to do and it will be a few years away.

With legislation moving the country closer to ditching petrol taxes in favour of all vehicles paying for the amount they drive, the Automobile Association says that switch could still be years away.

We're supporting the second annual Origin Logistics Technology Outlook, a research programme run by New Zealand software company Sandfield under its supply chain brand, Origin. It looks at how Australian and New Zealand supply chain operators are actually using technology, what is working, and what is holding them back.

The 2026 survey is now open. By taking part you will receive valuable insights and comparisons to take back to your business, covering:

● How your peers are using technology to build competitive advantage
● Where and how AI is actually being applied, and what it has delivered
● Technology spend, and what drives investment decisions
● Customer-facing technology and how customer expectations are shaping it
● System integration and visibility capabilities
● Barriers to change, and which ones actually bite
● Implementation approaches to technology
● Satisfaction with current systems, and what operators would replace first

This year includes the option to receive a personalised benchmark report showing how your operation compares against the rest of the pack.

We're all familiar with flashing red emergency services lights, or red and blue police lights, but did you know that there is another colour emergency light that road users are required to pull over for?

Green flashing lights are allowed under the road code for doctors, nurses or midwives. If you see a vehicle with green flashing lights, you must make way and stop if needed to allow these vehicles to pass. But unlike Police or emergency services, users of green lights are not permitted to exceed the speed limit.

The Award recognises a standout individual under 40 in the New Zealand roading sector, based on their career achievements to date.
