Spring has sprung here in New Zealand 🌱 The leaves are returning to the trees, the days are drawing out and it's starting to warm up after winter.

We're getting excited to welcome guests back for the season ahead, and today I've enjoyed looking back through photos sent in over the past year or so.

The coming months are shaping up nicely, and we're looking forward to helping create unforgettable memories on the road in the far corner of the world 🇳🇿

If you need a hand finding the right camper for you, drop us a note and we'll be happy to help. Plus, if you're thinking about travelling before the end of October, use code SPRING10 for an extra 10% off your hire.

🛠️✨ Van of the Week: Minerva ✨🛠️

Meet Minerva, a Hiace with clean lines, a beautifully calm interior and a name which gives a nod to who she is, a MINI RV. Check out her plate!

Her owner James also rather likes that Minerva was the Roman goddess of wisdom, strategic warfare and crafts, which he reckons sums up the twelve months he spent building her.

Minerva is a fine example of minimal design, with no bold colours, or distraction. Just crisp white panelling, warm wood worktops and a quiet teal accent. What makes her special is the workmanship: every part of her built by hand, slowly and properly, by someone who couldn't leave a corner unfinished.

Why adventurers love Minerva:
🪵 Hand-finished cabinetry and wood worktops throughout
🛏️ Generous 1.67m x 2.0m bed, or set it as a split king
🍳 Compact, kitchen with gas stove, sink and fridge
☀️ Solar power and leisure battery for off-grid nights
🌬️ Roof vent and ceiling fan to keep the air moving
⛱️ Professionally fitted side awning for shade and shelter

From owner, James:
"Having fitted many houses, it became apparent that a campervan conversion, with its curved lines, was more akin to boat building than regular DIY. We knew we didn't want just any old conversion, and a homely feel was key. I live by the maxim that if a job's worth doing, it's worth doing well."

Minerva lives in eastern Auckland, an easy launch pad for heading north to Northland or south through the Waikato.

For considered design, quiet comfort and a van that's been done properly, Minerva is ready when you are. 🚐💚

🎉✨ Our new website is LIVE ✨🎉

Campers! The Quirky NZ team has been burrowed away over the New Zealand winter working behind the scenes, and we're incredibly excited to announce that our new website and brand refresh are live. Take a look around and let us know what you think!

Our charming old site had been with us since the very beginning. It was a loyal companion, and it helped grow Quirky from a handful of vans into a fleet stretching across the country. We'd be nowhere without it, but it's fair to say it was showing its age in places.

Our branding and website have now been refreshed, but our focus hasn't changed: handmade, characterful vans that inspire meaningful adventures.

What's new:
🎨 A brand new logo and colour palette, grounded in outdoor tones
🔍 Easier searching & browsing, so you can compare vans and find your favourite faster
📱 Built for mobile, so you can plan from the sofa or the trailhead
🚐 A new home for van owners thinking about joining our community

With spring on the way and summer dates opening up, now's a good time to start plotting and scheming your NZ adventure. Can you find your room with a thousand views?

🌨️✨ Winter in the South Island, with Sunny ✨🌨️

Erik and Meredith took Sunny south last week and came back with these shots 📷

Low cloud hanging over the mountains, waterfalls in flow and golden tussock in the last of the day's light. Not another soul in sight!

This is the South Island in the off season, offering something a little different. The crowds thin out, the light is soft and golden, and landscapes give an alternative to their summer splendor.

Sunny makes it easy with a heater, plenty of blankets, and somewhere warm and dry to come back to after a day out in the weather. Cold outside, cosy inside, exactly as it should be.

Winter travel isn't always second best ❄️🚐💚

📸 Thanks to Erik and Meredith for sharing these

🐕✨ Van of the Week: Yorkie ✨🐕

New for the season and available to hire, meet Yorkie, a beautifully converted Mercedes Sprinter with a bit of Yorkshire, and a lot of New Zealand, running right through him.

Yorkie belongs to Tom and Alex, who moved to Auckland from Yorkshire and gave their van a name that carries a little piece of home along for the ride.

Why adventurers love Yorkie:
🚿 A huge hot indoor shower - a rare treat in a camper!
🛏️ Versatile sleeping setup: a pull-out that becomes a spacious king, or a double plus small single, sleeping up to 3
🪵 Warm wood panelling and easy-to-use blinds for a relaxed, beachy feel
🧳 Generous storage throughout
🍳 Full kitchen with a good-sized fridge freezer
🚽 Green-sticker certified for freedom camping
🚐 Automatic, turbo diesel, walk-through cab, Apple CarPlay and reversing camera
🐾 Well-behaved family dogs welcome

From Tom and Alex:
"We wanted a van that felt like home from anywhere. Somewhere you'd want to spend a rainy afternoon just as much as a sunny one."

Based in Hillsborough, Auckland, Yorkie is just 15 minutes from Auckland Airport and the C*D, a brilliant launchpad for a North Island loop or the full length of Aotearoa.

Yorkie is ready to roll! 🐕🚐💚

🌿✨ Quirky Travellers' Top Picks: The Barn, Marahau ✨🌿

Recommended by several of our customers, and it's easy to see why!

sits at the southern gateway to Abel Tasman National Park, steps from the start of the Abel Tasman Coast Track. Roll out your van, tighten those laces, and you're on one of New Zealand's Great Walks!

Why guests love The Barn:
🚶 60km of golden beaches, native bush and granite headlands, all on your doorstep
🌞 One of NZ's sunniest corners, and one of the few Great Walks doable year-round (no ice axe required!)
🛶 Kayak launches, water taxis and stunning swimming coves within easy reach
🔥 Communal fire pits, hot showers, camp kitchen and a friendly welcome
🌳 Over 30 years of hosting travellers from all over the world

A few fun facts about the area:

🇳🇱 Abel Tasman National Park is NZ's smallest, at just 22,530 hectares

📅 It opened in 1942, 300 years to the day after Dutch explorer Abel Tasman first sighted these shores (although he never actually set foot on land)

💚 In 2016, 40,000 Kiwis crowdfunded $2.8 million to buy Awaroa Beach and keep it in public hands forever. You'll walk this beach if you do the hike!

Pitch up at The Barn to book-end an unforgettable hike or trip to Abel Tasman.

🪶✨ Van of the Week: Kōtare ✨🪶

Meet Kōtare, the newest of our native bird themed campers!

She takes her name from the kōtare, Aotearoa's native kingfisher, a bird you'll often spot perched up high, keeping a sharp eye on the world below. That same spirit runs right through this hand-finished conversion, all vivid teal-blues and warm sandy tones, calm, characterful and ready to explore.

Why adventurers love Kōtare:
🛏️ Fold-out bed that leaves plenty of room to sit, read or work by day
🚿 Green-sticker self-contained with onboard toilet, 25L fresh and 25L grey water
🌿 Freedom camp where permitted
🍳 Full kitchen with gas cooker, sink and all the cooking basics
☀️ Solar and leisure battery for easy off-grid evenings
🔥 Optional electric heater for cosy cool-weather nights
⛱️ Awning for shade and shelter, with outdoor chairs, table and shower available

From Stephen and Suzanne:
"We had so much fun bringing the colours of the kōtare to life in this one, and we hope she becomes your home from home as you discover this beautiful country. Have fun out there."

Based in South Auckland, Kōtare is just 20 minutes from Auckland Airport and 20 minutes from the city, a perfect launchpad for a North Island roadie or a full-length Aotearoa adventure.

For coastal detours, quiet mornings, and travel that moves at your own pace, Kōtare is ready to welcome you!. 🪶🚐💚

🐬Quirky Customer Favourites, Stop 3: Pūrākaunui Bay Campground, in the Catlins 🐬

This week, the series takes us to the Catlins is one of Aotearoa's most underrated regions. Rugged coastline, native forest, waterfalls, sea lions and surf breaks, all without the crowds. And tucked along this wild stretch is one the Quirky team's favourite campgrounds: Pūrākaunui Bay DOC Campsite.

Why we love it:
🏕️ Basic, beautiful, beachfront DOC camping with space to breathe
🌊 Wide sandy bay framed by 200m cliffs (you can camp on top of them!)
🦭 Regular visits from NZ sea lions and seals on the beach
🏄 A proper surf break at the south end
🌙 No mobile reception, just stars, waves and quiet

Two nearby spots make it a must-stop:
🐬 Curio Bay, around an hour south, is one of the best places on Earth to spot Hector's dolphins from the shore. At just 1.4m long, they're the world's smallest marine dolphins and found only in New Zealand waters.

💦 McLean Falls, Catlins Forest Park, a short drive inland, is one of the Catlins' postcard waterfalls.

💡Nugget Point Lighthouse: which is solar powered, making it fully off-grid like many of our campervans!

For slow travel and the kind of wild Aotearoa that feels like a secret, the Catlins is well worth the detour. Pack warm layers, fill the tank, and go.🚐💚

🐾✨ Van of the Week: George ✨🐾

Meet George, a jumbo Toyota Hiace with room to spare and a big heart.

He's the newest addition to our fleet, freshly built by Brenda and Andy in Ohoka, just north of Christchurch. He's named after a little stray collie with a big personality who wandered into Brenda and Andy's lives and never left their hearts.

As a jumbo Hiace, George gives you genuine room to move. With 1.94m of interior height, most of us can stand and potter about in comfort.

Why adventurers love George:
🛏️ Fixed double bed (1.4m × 1.84m), always made up and ready
🍳 Tiled kitchen with gas cooker, sink, fridge and the basics
🌿 Green sticker for freedom camping
📺 TV and DVD player for cosy rainy afternoons
☀️ Solar panel topping up the leisure battery off-grid
⛱️ Awning, outdoor table and chairs included
🚐 Automatic, reversing camera, air con, easy to drive

From Brenda and Andy:
"George was a little dog with a big personality. He had a gentle, loyal nature that quickly made him part of the family, and a way of making everyone feel welcome. We named one of our campervans after him because this van carries a real sense of character, warmth and adventure."

Based 20 minutes from Christchurch Airport, George is a brilliant launchpad for a South Island adventure.

For slow roads, salty air, and the kind of travel where you always find your way home, George is ready to welcome you in. 🐾🚐💚

🏞️ Quirky Customer Favourites, Stop 2: Glendhu Bay 🏞️

This year our customer, George, put Glendhu Bay Holiday Park firmly on our radar, saying "with lakefront camping spots and amazing views, it's hard to beat."

He's not wrong! Tucked into a picturesque bay on the shores of Lake Wānaka, close to Wānaka town and on the doorstep of Mt Aspiring National Park, Glendhu Bay makes the perfect spot for a lakefront campground. It's a Kiwi camp in every sense: spacious sites, a backdrop of the Southern Alps, and a setting that's drawn guests back each year since the 1920s.

Why guests love it:
🌊 Lakefront sites with uninterrupted lake and mountain views
🚐 Powered and non-powered sites, plus cabins, a lodge and a fully furnished house
🍳 Big shared kitchen, covered BBQ areas, laundry and playground
🛶 Boat ramp and boat parking right at the camp

Nearby
🥾 Roy's Peak trailhead (5 minutes), one of NZ's best hikes (see picture 4!)
🚵 Bike Glendhu just across the road, with world-class mountain biking trails
⛷️ Treble Cone ski field (15 minutes), the largest ski area in the South Island
🏔️ Mt Aspiring National Park, right on your doorstep
🧗 Rock climbing at Hospital Flat, Riverside and Diamond Lake
🍷 The cafes, restaurants and wineries of Wānaka town (10 minutes)

✨ Fun fact: There is a small island in Lake Wānaka called Mou Waho. On top of it sits Arethusa Pool, a tiny alpine lake. So technically, it's a lake on an island, on a lake, on an island. Geologists call it "recursive". We just call it quirky! 🌀

Big thanks to the team at Glendhu Bay for sharing brilliant photos! 🚐
