Big news for rural recycling!
The Government has officially approved a new nationwide recycling scheme that brings Agrecovery and Plasback together into one simple, free and accessible programme for farmers and growers across New Zealand.

For more than 20 years, both organisations have worked hard to build awareness and improve on-farm recycling. Now, this new regulated scheme takes rural recycling to the next level — ensuring all producers play their part in managing plastic waste responsibly.

As proud stewards of the land, New Zealand’s farmers and growers work hard to care for the environment. The Government is making this easier by approving regulations for a nationwide rural recycling scheme covering agrichemicals and farm plastics, Environment Minister Penny Simmonds says.

Recycling baling twine correctly is absolutely imperative. Now that the baling season is kicking off it's the perfect time to be cleaning up those twines from the fodder you've used through the winter.
Check out why PP twine needs to remain in its own recycling scheme.

Polypropylene (PP) twine – also known as baling twine – plays an essential role on farms across New Zealand, keeping hay and silage bales secure through the season. But when it comes time to dispose of used twine, how it’s recycled matters just as much as ensuring it gets recycled at all. PP...

This post highlights the importance of responsible plastic management. We frequently discuss product stewardship and proper plastic disposal, including contamination reduction. A fence post was inadvertently (we assume it wasn't deliberate)included in today's baling and entered the baler. While mistakes can occur, this incident is particularly concerning. We urge your assistance in supporting New Zealand farming in minimizing plastic contamination and ensuring contractor safety when handling plastic waste.

Unfortunately, RNZ has made an error in their calculations. The fee is determined by $462 per tonne of new bale wrap. Based on 40 rolls per tonne, the fee is approximately $11-55 per roll. If a roll can wrap 22 bales, the additional cost per bale is 52 cents.

A levy would contribute to the recycling of baleage and silage covers.

Recycling can be a dirty and difficult business with contamination being a real issue but we have recently seen a new level of carelessness from the farming community.
A live shotgun cartridge was in a Plasback Bag delivered to our Christchurch site, fortunately we found it before anything serious occurred. We Bale the plastic which gets dropped into a large shredder prior to recycling and there's every chance this would detonate.

RECYCLING SOLUTIONS FOR FARMERS

Plasback operates Agpac’ s Product Stewardship scheme to recover used farm plastics for recycling. Plasback came to New Zealand in 2006, and has gone from strength to strength. Operating their original bin and liner system, which when combined with on farm collection, has contributed to Plasback not only running a simple and effective system but has meant over 10,000 tonnes of waste collected since the scheme’s in 2006! As part of our continued commitment to Product Stewardship we now operate six purpose built balers designed to improve the onward transport logistics from our main centres to the recycling plants, and have introduced new products made from recycled plastics, Tuffboard, Tuffdeck, and Plaswood. We have a reliable network of Contractors who run the collections, and cover the whole of New Zealand.

Plasback was the first product stewardship scheme for agriculture to receive accreditation from the Ministry for the Environment in 2010.
