September is one of the most rewarding months for an African safari, with dry conditions across many destinations bringing excellent wildlife viewing as animals gather around rivers and waterholes.

It’s also a great time for walking safaris, exploring the Okavango Delta and witnessing the Great Migration in Kenya and Tanzania. Further south, spring wildflowers and whale watching add another dimension to a South African itinerary, while Mozambique offers warm, sunny beach weather.

August is peak safari season across much of Africa, with outstanding wildlife viewing in many of the continent's most iconic destinations.

The dry season continues, bringing warm days, cool mornings and evenings, and excellent wildlife viewing as animals gather around rivers and waterholes. It's also one of the best months for experiences such as walking safaris, mokoro excursions and witnessing the Great Migration.

A few August highlights:

- Botswana: Huge elephant herds gather around Chobe and Linyanti, while the Okavango Delta is ideal for exploring by mokoro.
- Tanzania & Kenya: The Great Migration continues through the Serengeti and Maasai Mara, with river crossings often a highlight.
- Zambia: Walking safari season is at its best, with excellent opportunities to spot predators in South Luangwa.
- Zimbabwe: Victoria Falls offers spectacular views with less spray, and there is excellent game viewing in the National Parks.
- South Africa: Exceptional game viewing in Kruger National Park, plus whale watching and the first spring wildflowers in the Western Cape.

A Closer Look 🔎: Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is one of Africa's most famous natural wonders, straddling the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe on the mighty Zambezi River.

Known locally as *Mosi-oa-Tunya*, meaning "The Smoke That Thunders", the falls are over 1.7 kilometres wide and, during the wet season, send millions of litres of water plunging over the edge every minute.

The mist created by the falls can be seen from kilometres away and supports a unique rainforest that thrives year-round, despite the surrounding landscape being much drier.

Visitors can experience Victoria Falls in many different ways, from walking the network of viewing paths to scenic helicopter flights, sunset cruises on the Zambezi River or even swimming in Devil's Pool during the dry season.

For many travellers, Victoria Falls is much more than a stop between safari destinations. It's one of the highlights of an African journey.

Tour Spotlight 🔎: Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique Trade Route (22 days)

A Closer Look 🔎: Sossusvlei

Sossusvlei is one of Namibia's most iconic landscapes and home to some of the highest sand dunes in the world. Located within the Namib-Naukluft National Park, the area is known for its towering red dunes, vast salt pans, and dramatic desert scenery.

The dunes have been shaped by the wind over millions of years, with colours that shift throughout the day as the light changes. Some rise more than 300 metres above the surrounding desert, creating spectacular views for those willing to make the climb.

One of the most photographed locations in Namibia is Deadvlei, a white clay pan dotted with ancient camel thorn trees that have stood preserved in the dry desert air for centuries.

While the landscape may appear harsh, the Namib Desert supports a surprising range of wildlife specially adapted to survive in these arid conditions.

For many travellers, Sossusvlei is one of the highlights of a journey through Namibia and a place that feels unlike anywhere else on earth.

Travel Guide 🌍 Travelling in Africa in July

July is one of the best months for safari travel across Africa, with excellent wildlife viewing in many of the continent's most iconic destinations.

As the dry season continues, animals gather around rivers and waterholes, vegetation thins out, and wildlife becomes easier to spot. With so many destinations performing well, choosing where to go often comes down to the type of experience you're looking for.

A few July highlights:

• Botswana: The Okavango Delta is in full flood, making it a fantastic time to explore the waterways by traditional mokoro
• Tanzania: The Great Migration reaches the northern Serengeti, while Tarangire's elephant herds continue to build along the river
• Zambia: Walking safari season is in full swing in South Luangwa, one of Africa's premier walking safari destinations
• Namibia: Wildlife congregates around Etosha's permanent waterholes, creating excellent game viewing opportunities
