Travel Guide 🌍 Travelling in Africa in October

October brings some of the hottest conditions of the safari season, particularly across southern Africa, but the reward can be exceptional wildlife viewing.

With the dry season nearing its end, animals continue to gather around remaining water sources in Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia. In East Africa, wildlife viewing remains excellent, with the Great Migration back in the Serengeti.

It’s also a fantastic month for photography, with dry, dusty landscapes creating beautiful golden light, while Mozambique offers a great option for adding some beach time to your safari.

**Tour Spotlight 🔎: Botswana Trans Kalahari (15 days)**

Journey through some of Botswana’s most remote and contrasting landscapes on this adventurous camping safari, from the vast salt pans of the Makgadikgadi to the waterways of the Okavango Delta and wide-open wilderness of the Central Kalahari.

The journey heads north from Johannesburg, exploring Goo-Moremi Gorge and the baobabs and vast salt pans surrounding Kubu Island before travelling into Moremi Game Reserve. From getting comfortable with your camera before you leave to making the most of changing light and weather, we’ve pulled together a few tips inspired by the photography experts featured in a recent issue of *Travel Africa*.

And remember, it’s not all about getting the perfect wildlife shot. Photograph the landscapes, people, plants, places you stay and smaller details along the way. They’re all part of the safari story too.

A Closer Look 🔎: Drakensberg

Wet and dry seasons offer very different safari experiences, and neither is necessarily better than the other.

In much of southern Africa, the dry season generally runs from May to October. During this time, animals gather around permanent water sources, vegetation is less dense, and wildlife is often easier to spot.

The wet season typically runs from November to April. Seasonal rains transform the landscape, many animals give birth, migratory birds return, and the scenery becomes lush and green.

The exact timing varies between destinations, but understanding the seasons is one of the best ways to choose a safari that matches what you'd most like to experience.
