Give us a call today and experience the Uhlenberg Haulage difference. Uhlenberg Haulage Limited is a family owned and operated business with over 50 years history in road transport. Uhlenberg Haulage have a reputation for the long distance cartage of specialised freight which requires precision and special care to ensure damage free, on time deliveries with no compromise on safety practices. Our f

leet of modern equipment is set up and regularly maintained to the highest standard by our fully equipped workshop. Uhlenberg Haulage was founded in 1966 by Mike and Carol Uhlenberg. Work in the early days consisted mainly of carting metal for Ministry of Works roading projects in North Taranaki. A move to Eltham in 1971, where they are still based today, saw the business diversify into the cartage of logs, metal, fertiliser and other commodities required by the rural community. LPG was first carried by Uhlenbergs from the Kapuni field in 1972, this work is 65% of the workload today, with LPG bulk products distributed for clients throughout the North Island. LPG tankers are based at Eltham, Hamilton and Auckland depots. The 1990’s saw Uhlenbergs diversify further into cartage of refrigerated products, which has resulted in a partnership with clients for whom UHL shift export beef and lamb products throughout the central and southern North Island regions. Local cartage includes metal, fertiliser, palm kernel, general freight as well as heavy machine shifts such as bulldozers, diggers and suchlike. The company is 100% locally owned and operated by second generation brothers, Chris, Daryl and Tony Uhlenberg.

Jimmy has cracked twenty years of service to Uhlenberg Haulage today, the first ten of which he completed at the wheel - delivering LPG around the country, before taking over the LPG managers role. From the outside looking in – it would be easy to think that this job is despatching and scheduling deliveries from the far North of NZ to Bluff in the deep south, but that’s only part of it. There is much more to Jimmys role than despatch, he manages product from early in the NZ LPG supply chain through until it gets pumped into your 45 or 9 kg cylinder, Jimmy also looks after over half of our drivers and is involved in tanker maintenance and customer focus with our LPG clients. To be honest it is a role that takes a special person to get through the challenges involved without getting flustered, and Jimmy does this well -day after day (and night after night too). Thanks Jimmy, we salute you. The UHL team have planned a little celebration later on in the month- when we can get you away from the phone. Well done mate.

We are chasing historic photos or memorabilia relating to our business and fleet from the early days. Do you have anything, or know someone that may have photos or movies that we can copy please? We don’t require anything from the 90’s onwards, we already have a lot of the Peterbilt or modern Kenworth - Mack - Western Star era. We are really chasing the 60’s 70’s and 80s, old inters, early Kenworth’s, Eltham Transport D series Fords, bulk spreaders etc. As well as trucks, we are keen to see anything relating to our people, staff etc as well. Let us know what you have, send to [email protected] or call 06 7648205. We will sort copying and the return of whatever you can supply. The best exhibit will receive a prize from the team at UHL. Thanks

We don’t plan to have new trucks doing their maiden voyage on weekends, but it is the way that it has worked out with the last few units, probably indicating how hard our team work to make things happen. A few Saturdays ago, Mark made his first trip in UHL48. Marks new mount is our preferred - go to line haul model, a Kenworth T610, which under his guidance will see all of the North Island throughout its days delivering bulk LPG to our client’s depots. Named “Stranger to Town” recognising Marks outback heritage and the fact that he doesn’t really do cities and big gatherings, in fact - Mark and his partner prefer the country life and run a rural operation and a remarkable property when he is not pedalling a green machine around the country. We almost managed to get a smile out of Mark when we ambushed him with a camera, to which he replied “why do you need a photo? hurry up, I’ve got work to do!” Typical of Marks work ethic - getting it done with no fuss or drama. Enjoy your days and nights on the road in 48 Mark, we appreciate your efforts. Footnote: We are slow reporting this, today UHL48 is in for its 6000km first service - demonstrating that there is no idle time with our LPG delivery guys. And thanks to the UHL workshop team for yet again presenting a unit with perfection.

Way back in April 1981, a young fellow by the name of Ross took over his father’s sales run selling stationery and office products to Taranaki businesses. One of Ross’s first calls at that point was to Carol Uhlenberg at the Eltham Transport/ Uhlenberg Haulage offices in Bridge Street Eltham. From that point Ross created his business, Viking Officeworks, and we have enjoyed Ross’s regular Tuesday visits, selling us everything from pencil sharpeners to office furniture for decades since then. UHL have many long-term suppliers, clients and associates, but short of our muilti - generation dairy farming clients, there are probably only a few - if any, that have been part of the furniture for as long as Ross has? Now - 45 years later, almost to the day, Ross has decided to hang his brief case (which we might add, was always full of interesting things as well as a very busy order book). The Uhlenberg family and our staff appreciate the partnership throughout these years, and we look forward to continuing the business with the new Viking owners, Paul Goble and his family. The UHL office team couldn’t resist a little celebration of Ross’s service with a nibble of specially prepared Banana cake during his final visit this morning, and yes Ross did manage to get some lines filled in on the order book while he was passing through. Well done Rossco, you have consistently been the best dressed and most professional salesman in the Taranaki business world, we are proud to shop local with the kiwi companies that help to make our businesses what they are. Enjoy your well-earned relaxation mate.

Uhlenberg’s require an additional bulk tanker driver to join our team. Applicants must be experienced - New Zealand drivers - with an Incident free driving history. The role requires drivers to operate Peterbilt and Kenworth trucks with both manual and auto transmissions – towing bulk LPG tankers, loading and delivering LPG within the Taranaki and North Island regions. There will be a small number of nights spent away from home. DG or tanker experience is a skill that is useful – but not essential, however an incident free driving record and a good attitude is important to us. Other types of work ie; containers and swing lift work may be available to the applicant who likes variety, but this is not an essential part of the primary role. UHL is a drug free work place, with screening requirements to be met consistently by all members of our team. We don’t need a big flowery CV, just tell us about your work history and any relevant information. If you are considering joining our team - apply online at www.uhlenbergs.co.nz - or e mail your details and a short summary about yourself to [email protected] - Note that the position is based in Eltham or potentially New Plymouth.

The UHL directors appreciated local member of Parliament, Carl Bates taking the time to make an appointment and visit us last week. We had some robust discussion on where our business, and the road transport industry as a whole has been, is currently, and where we think that they may be heading. Also, we informed each other on the state of the nation and the rights and wrongs of our world, Amazingly the Uhlenberg team opted to avoid the subject of road conditions, as we felt that Carl had likely heard it all before seeing us. Having said this, Carl did give us an insight into many local roading scenarios and news, both good and bad, as well as many other subjects of interest. Thanks again Carl for calling in to our offices, you certainly shared some good knowledge with our team.

We have a few new trucks going on the road from time to time, with a couple of replacements scheduled for early 2026. The new UHL27 will make its debut this Sunday - heading to a yet unknown destination somewhere in the North Island. This latest edition is a Kenworth K220 which will be operated by Corey - assisted by the LPG loading team in the mornings. Corey has been on bulk LPG for a number of years and has put a fantastic effort into viewing many sunsets from the seat of UHL33 while working on permanent afternoon shifts. The K220 is not one of our usual models purchased, but it is good to keep our options open on various layouts and setups, also the cab over KW is ideal for repurposing into the refrigerated or container areas of our operation later in the trucks life, currently we have four of the old K models doing exactly this. Corey’s old ride UHL33 - is now for sale and is in excellent condition inside and out, it has also had a recent scheduled engine rebuild meaning that the next lucky owner can be sure to get a good life out of it. Well done Corey on your continued high level of professionalism, and thanks to Adam from Southpac Trucks Ltd for the smooth deal – also Dave from our workshop for his eye for detail in setting up and commissioning the new trucks for our operation, all top guys in our opinion.

With Uhlenberg Haulage about to enter its 60th year in business, we feel that we should start to reflect on parts of our history, and how we got to where we are today. This part of the story is about Mike and Carol starting out. Bear in mind that you had to buy a license as well as a vehicle to legally operate back then, so in 1966 the young Uhlenberg couple bought a 1961 C7 Commer from Ken Pardington - complete with a license and contract to work for the Ministry of Works. Along with several other MOW owner drivers, this gave Mike and Carol the opportunity to work from Bell Block, mainly on the road north, and predominantly in the Mount Messenger area, delivering aggregates and supplies to maintain and improve the road North from Taranaki. Little did Mike know way back then, that he would eventually become a pioneer of line haul trucking in New Zealand, gaining permits to distribute LPG from Taranaki to Auckland in the early 70’s and in later times to all of the country, meaning that he would travel this road for the rest of his working life, however that’s a story for later. The key to this part of our history is that it is almost 60 years since this road became our stomping ground, and for almost every day, year or decade since - our fleet have traversed this interesting road multiple times per day. The attached photo shows Mike readying his first truck for work way back then, the video shows UHL32 returning south for another load, whilst meeting UHL33 heading north, loaded with some more product to keep the country supplied with energy. This brilliant video is the work of local truck enthusiasts Will and Liam Bishop. The footage was not staged; it just happened while they were capturing some trucking history one day recently. We thank the Bishop’s for sharing their trucking archives with the world, and we also take this opportunity to pass on our thanks and respect to all of our staff- who help to keep New Zealand moving. Merry Christmas from the team with the green machines. (turn your sound on when viewing the video)

A big thanks to all of our loyal supporters and followers – who have alerted the UHL team that a low grade social media organisation have stooped to the lowest level, using an image of one of our fleet to showcase an article referring to revoked drivers’ licenses. This has also happened recently to other reputable operators – who have an exceptionally high standard of safety. As you are all aware, Uhlenberg’s operate to a very high standard and employ and train the best of the best, to ensure that our client’s goods are delivered safely. We find it sad that the reputation of our operation and that of our operators could be tarnished by this type of reporting, but we acknowledge that that is how many in the modern media operate. They are all about fake news, and negative reporting, they are never wanting to report about the fact that our great industry keeps New Zealand moving, and all that we put a lot into the community, both financially and for the betterment of many organisations that help those in need of support. If you see this article, you can help us by reporting it to facebook.

It was great to get a good number of our team together for a meal and a few stories last Saturday evening. The great folk at Ohangai Events cared and catered for the Uhlenberg team, providing first class meals and excellent service in their neat facilities. Sione Faumuina also attended the entire event and he gave us an insight into his life and into his world of a being a professional sports person – we highly recommend Sione, he is a great speaker. A nice evening was had by all who attended, sorry to the members who - for a variety of reasons – unfortunately, couldn’t attend. Thanks also to the organisers and those that helped make this event into a memorable occasion. We are privileged and proud to have such a neat group of people making our team what it is.
