🚗 Airport Car Park Progress Update 🚗

Our Airport Manager, Murray Bell (Muz) is pleased to share an update on our awesome new carpark.

Thank you for your patience over the last couple of months while it’s been under construction. There are a few minor works left but we are pleased to have everything fully operational for the busy summer season.

🚧 Overflow Carpark Update 🚧

Construction on our upgraded overflow carpark is moving along well. While this work continues, the current overflow area will stay open in a limited capacity for around one more week, as we complete sealing and line marking on the section closest to the terminal.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and please continue to follow on-site signage and the guidance of our team. A friendly reminder that the overflow carpark is a 24-hour only park during weekdays, and tow-aways will be enforced next week as we transition into the next stage of construction. Clear signage will be in place ahead of the changeover so you know exactly what to expect.

Thank you for bearing with us. These improvements will make parking safer, smoother, and far more user-friendly once complete.

🚗 Carpark Price Increase 🚗

To keep pace with rising costs and the investment in Gisborne Airport’s new carpark, we’re making a small adjustment to parking charges.

New charges from 16 December:
0–20 mins = Free
20 mins – 40 mins $3
40 mins - 1 hr = $5
1–2 hrs = $10
2–3 hrs = $12
3–12 hrs = $18
12–24 hrs = $20
Each additional day = $20/day

Our focus is on keeping prices fair - Gisborne will still offer some of the most affordable daily and weekly rates in New Zealand.

We appreciate your understanding as we continue investing in safe, convenient facilities for our community and visitors.

Our team and partners cleaned up a stretch of the Waikanae awa (river) surrounding Gisborne Airport a couple of weeks back uncovering plastics of all kinds, including a Wattie’s fries packet from the 1960s–70s! 😲

A stark reminder that plastic lasts generations and that small actions really do make a difference. 💪

We’re giving old concrete from Eastland Port a new life by using 4,000 tonnes from the Wharf 7 Rebuild as the base layer for our new carpark. ✈️♻️🚢

🚗 Major car park upgrade starting this week! ✈️

We’re more than doubling our parking spaces with 92 new public spaces and 34 new staff spaces.

This upgrade is the first in a series of planned improvements that will create a more cohesive, accessible, and sustainable airport precinct to support the long-term needs of our community, travellers, and tenants.

The upgrade includes:
✅ Better lighting, signage, CCTV and pedestrian access
✅ A wetland stormwater system co-designed with Ngāi Tāwhiri
✅ A smart new layout that looks great and works better as one of the gateways to our region

🛠 We have carefully staged this project to minimise disruption:
Stage 1: A new 34-space staff car park
Stages 2: A 60-space public car park.
Stage 3: A 32-space public car park.
Stage 4 Upgrades to the main car park entry/exit

👏 Local contractors Earthwork Solutions Ltd will be getting stuck in this week. This project is a great example of how strong local partnerships can deliver smart, sustainable infrastructure for Tairāwhiti.
