🌱 More than 4,000 native plants in the ground for the Waikanae Awa (the stream that runs alongside Gisborne Airport).

Tamariki from Gisborne Intermediate, Awapuni School and Elgin School, alongside representatives from Ngāi Tāwhiri and Eastland Port, did an incredible job planting and staking 2,000+ native plants in some pretty challenging ground conditions. Awapuni School also grew an impressive 934 of the plants themselves! 💚

The following week, the Rongowhakaata Iwi Trust Taiao team completed the mahi, planting another 2,400 plants - awesome!

A huge mihi to everyone involved. Awesome mahi for the future of Waikanae Awa Tīpuna. 🌿

Our Airport Rescue Fire Team recently had the opportunity to undertake valuable aircraft familiarisation training, thanks to a visit from the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF).

This hands-on training helps ensure our firefighters are prepared to respond quickly and safely in an emergency by understanding how to access the cockpit, isolate aircraft power systems, and navigate different aircraft types.

As an added bonus, the team also learned about the aircraft's ejection seat system – specialist knowledge that could prove critical in an emergency response.

A big thank you to the RNZAF crew for sharing their expertise and helping our team maintain the skills and knowledge needed to keep our airport community safe. 👏✈️🚒

UPDATE 7:14pm: The aircraft has been recovered and normal airport operations have resumed. We’d like to thank emergency services for their response. The cause of the incident is not yet known but is being investigated by the appropriate authorities.

Emergency services are currently responding to an incident involving a helicopter at Gisborne Airport.

There were two people on board the aircraft. We can confirm there are no reported injuries and there is no fire.

Emergency services remain at the scene, and we are working closely with the relevant agencies to support the response.

The cause of the incident is not yet known and will be investigated by the appropriate authorities.

We thank emergency services for their prompt response and ask that people avoid the area unless they have a legitimate reason to be there.

Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

🚁🐾 A very special gift for some very brave little people 🩵

We recently donated 50 copies of a local children’s book Chopper and Frank The Rescue Dogs to the Eastland Helicopter Rescue Trust crew.

These lovely little books help kids understand the amazing work the rescue helicopter crew do, and for children who’ve had a ride in the helicopter themselves, they’ll also be a special keepsake to take home.

Even better, $5 from every book sold goes back to supporting the rescue helicopter service - helping keep this incredible service flying for our community.

A small gesture from us to support a team that does such big things for Tairāwhiti every single day. 🚁✨

🚗 Airport Car Park Progress Update 🚗

Our Airport Manager, Murray Bell (Muz) is pleased to share an update on our awesome new carpark.

Thank you for your patience over the last couple of months while it’s been under construction. There are a few minor works left but we are pleased to have everything fully operational for the busy summer season.
