✨ A new chapter for an old Gisborne icon. ✨

The old rail bridge between the city and Inner Harbour is being transformed into a dedicated pedestrian walkway - turning a piece of our railway history into something the community can safely keep using for generations to come.

Funded by Trust Tairāwhiti and delivered by Eastland Port and Universal Engineering, the project will retain the bridge’s distinctive concrete structure while removing the old railway tracks, installing new handrails and creating better connections to the existing walkways at each end.

The project also has the support of Heritage Tairāwhiti and Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga, helping ensure this much-loved piece of Gisborne history is preserved while being given a practical new purpose.

The result will be a safer, better link between the city, riverfront and Inner Harbour, and a pretty special new addition to Gisborne’s waterfront.

Work is expected to get underway in October.

👀 Spot the Albatros! Dredging around the Harbour this week ⚠️

The Albatros is currently carrying out dredging within the shipping channel and will be working around the wharves and further up to the Inner Harbour Marina over the coming week.

As you'll see from the photo below, this is a large working vessel, so please take extra care when on the water and give it plenty of room to operate.

Boaties can communicate directly with the Albatros on VHF Channel 12 if required.

This important work helps ensure commercial ships can continue to safely transit the shipping channel and supports the future relocation of our tugboats to their new home at Wharf 1.

👷⚓ Wharf 1 Tug Berth Project 👷⚓

Work is underway on our Wharf 1 Tug Berth project, located in the inner harbour in front of The Wharf Bar and Lone Star.

This important investment will strengthen the future resilience, safety and capability of our port. Once complete, Wharf 1 will become the new home for our tugboats, Maki and Ika Nui. The new tug berth will provide improved access, better protection from surge, and safer, more efficient working conditions for our crews.

From late July, you'll notice increased marine activity as maintenance dredging begins in the inner harbour and wider port, followed by further dredging and construction of the new berth later in the year.

We'll be working closely with harbour users, neighbouring businesses and the community to minimise disruption wherever possible and will keep you updated as the project progresses.

Construction is now underway for our crane beam project (located on Wharf 8), with our construction partner Ritchie Civil Ltd making great progress already! 🤩💪👏

The crane beams will provide the foundations for cranes to operate closer to the breakwater, improving our loading capability and supporting the safe and efficient movement of cargo through Eastland Port.

This project will help ensure we can continue to meet the needs of our customers and support the region's exporters.
