Help us save the island economy!!

As you all know Covid-19 has left many local businesses suffering and unfortunately in many cases having to close completely. The island paradise we call home is no exception and has had a dramatic down turn in tourist numbers, which for a lot of local operators is their livelihood. The unfortunate follow on affect means a lot of our close friends and loved ones will have to leave Stewart Island to seek alternative employment. So with level 2 approaching and many kiwis developing itchy feet, we have developed a plan...

What we want to do to try and boost the Islands economy is offer a special deal to any kiwi (from here or abroad) a “pay what you like” approach for every tour for the entire month of September, in an attempt to encourage domestic tourism and save our island. Our standard half day guided snorkel tour is valued at $160, but we are going to waive this fee and allow people to pay what they like/can afford (even it you can’t afford to pay anything) and only ask that you spend what you saved on the tour price at any of our local accommodations, tourism operators, shops and services.

For the safety of visitors, volunteers and staff, DOC is temporarily closing its visitor centres to the public from today, and from tomorrow will be cancelling all hut and campsite bookings

BUNKERS BACKPACKERS CLOSURE.

Covid-19 cases are are now being reported in the South Island. Therefore, we at Bunkers Backpackers have made the difficult decision to close the hostel.

The recommendations for ‘social distancing’ just isn’t possible in our hostel environment.

This means that as of Tuesday March 24th we will be closed for the season (instead of the scheduled
season close - May 1st). We came to the conclusion that it is better to overreact with concern and love for the many people who pass through our doors than it is to under-react and aid in the spread of COVID-19.

If you have a booking with us we will be in contact shortly. Again, we want to apologize to those customers who will be affected by our closing but ask for understanding in this difficult and unprecedented situation.

Don’t forget to check in with each other, ask each other how you can help and support each other.

Our awesome managers are continuing their travels. We need someone to run our small backpackers (19 beds) from early January until end of April. We have a young family so can no longer do it ourselves.

The job involves all the day to day running of the hostel - booking, greeting guests, check ins, cleaning etc.

Stewart Island is a fantastic place to settle down for a few months and save money. The atmosphere at the hostel is laidback and social, great place to meet people.

Would ideally suit a couple (we are building next door so potentially work for a builder too). Solo travellers welcome to apply tho🙂. Hours flexible, with cleaning in the morning, then just having the phone with you for bookings etc for the rest of the day.

It’s a live in position, so you need to be a ‘people’ person.
