My own brother didn’t know what a pilot vehicle was.
Sat in the lounge with the family the other day talking about the app, and he told me that a few years back he drove past a pilot heading up to Whangamatā. He thought, what is this person even doing out here. Then a massive load came around the corner in front of him.
Yesterday I saw on the news that green flashing lights are for doctors. I learnt that from a news story. Guilty of missing that in the road code. Just like a lot of drivers miss the purple and amber light information.
Here’s the actual problem. Everyone knows red and blue. After that it’s a guess. Amber sits on road crews, tow trucks, tractors, farm gear and pilot vehicles all at once, so when you see amber ahead you genuinely cannot tell if it’s a cone truck or forty tonnes of transformer taking up both lanes around the next bend.
That gap isn’t the public’s fault. It’s just never been taught properly.
And it matters, because the most dangerous part of moving an oversized load has never been the load. It’s the car that doesn’t know what it’s looking at.
So one of the goals for HAULR, if a few more people learn what a pilot vehicle is and what to do when they see one, that’s a few more loads through safely and a few more drivers home.
