A reminder that we’re stopping publishing to this page – follow NZ Transport Agency for updates about travel on Southland’s state highways: https://www.facebook.com/nztaos

SouthRoads has been awarded a new contract to manage Southland’s state highways for the next 10 years. As part of that, we’ll stop publishing updates on this page from 1 May 2026, so we encourage you to follow NZTA: Transport Agency – Otago & Southland.

NZTA updates their page in real time with information about travel on state highways as conditions change, along with information about planned roadworks, and other work happening on state highways around the region.

A huge thank you to everyone who has supported and engaged with this page – and we’re proud to continue looking after the region we call home for the next decade.

This is also a great reminder to start preparing again for winter. We know well how the colder months bring frost, snow, and ice to our roads – a great reminder to check your vehicle is fit for winter, remember to do the basics such as use your NZTA’s page before travelling.

Our summer renewal season is drawing to a close. Over the past 7 months we’ve resealed and resurfaced over 120 lane kilometres of the Southland state highway network.

This includes over 25 lane kilometres of brand-new road built from the ground up, including the work on SH6 North Road featured in the photo, which we completed over the weekend.

We’re also proud to share that SouthRoads has been awarded the Southland Integrated Delivery Contract (IDC) – allowing us to continue as the contractor caring for Southland’s state highway network.

As a long‑standing Southland business, this outcome reflects the capability of our people, the strength of our local relationships, and our ongoing commitment to delivering safe, reliable roads for our communities.

The move into the IDC marks the next chapter in how Southland’s network is managed, and we’re excited to build on what we know works – working closely with our partners and keeping a strong local focus on safety, resilience, and value for money.

As part of this transition, we’ll be shutting down this page (Highways South) on Friday 1 May. To stay up to date with roadworks, maintenance updates, and network information for the region, follow NZ Transport Agency’s Otago & Southland page: https://www.facebook.com/nztaos.

NZTA also has a separate page for Canterbury and the West Coast: https://www.facebook.com/nztacwc

A huge thank you to everyone who has supported and engaged with us here – we’re proud to continue looking after the region we call home for the next decade.
