🥓 Last Friday, we held a Winter Driving Breakfast for our team.

❄ A big thank you to the team at Drivetech Southland for coming along to deliver a winter driving refresher and share some important road safety tips. We also provided our team with winter packs to help them stay safe and prepared over the colder months – thank you to our suppliers for their support in making this possible.

☕ And of course, thanks to The Grocer for keeping everyone fuelled with bacon butties and coffee!

🚛 𝐁𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐥: 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐤 𝐌𝐚𝐱𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥

Frank joined McNeill in June 2025, bringing with him a strong background in truck driving across civil construction and earthworks in Auckland. After 13 years in the city, Frank and his wife Teresa were ready to trade a busy lifestyle for somewhere quieter, more relaxed, and far removed from the hustle and bustle of Auckland.

Frank’s first introduction to Invercargill came during a truck drivers’ weekend away, when the first thing he noticed was the McNeill sign on Airport Avenue. That moment sparked his interest in the company, and after applying for a role, he hasn’t looked back. It didn’t take long for Invercargill to feel like home, and Frank now enjoys the laid back lifestyle the Southland region offers.

At McNeill, Frank values the work–life balance, enjoying the ability to complete his loads and then head home to unwind. One of his standout memories with the company is working at the Kaiwera wind farm, where he especially enjoyed driving the open roads out of Invercargill.

If Frank could drive anywhere in the world, it would be the USA to experience long distance trucking and life on the road. And if he could choose one passenger for the day, it would be his wife Teresa, so he could share what he does each day and show her the sights around Southland!

🚛 𝐁𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐥: 𝐈𝐯𝐨 𝐑𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐝

Before joining McNeill as a Cadet in 2023, Ivo worked at Mainland Frame and Truss for three years with Hamish and the team. While he enjoyed both the role and the people, he was eager to build a career that quite literally 𝘴𝘱𝘶𝘯 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘴.

Ivo especially enjoys the long‑distance trips and seeing more of the countryside. At the moment he regularly travels to Balclutha and Dunedin, though he admits his favourite runs are Queenstown and Wānaka, particularly in the summer months.

Out on the road, Ivo alternates between audiobooks and his own Spotify playlists. Audiobooks give him the chance to “read” books he wouldn’t otherwise have time for - he’s just finished the Tom Clancy series.

If he could drive anywhere in the world, it would be back home in Germany. While cars drive faster there, the speed limit for trucks is lower than in New Zealand. And if he could have one passenger for the day, it would be Lionel Messi. As a footballer himself, he would love the opportunity to spend time with who he considers the world’s greatest!

His advice for anyone considering the industry? Give it a go. The industry needs more drivers. Seek out opportunities, apply yourself, listen (and filter) the advice you receive, take on feedback, don’t get overconfident too early — and be patient. It’s a varied and enjoyable career if you commit to it.

When asked what he would be if he wasn’t a truck driver, he paused before deciding there really wasn’t another option - it was meant to be!

🚛 𝐁𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐥: 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐞𝐥 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬

For Michael, moving to New Zealand wasn’t just about starting a new job, it was about creating a better future for his family. Before joining McNeill, he spent nine years as a truck and trailer driver in the Philippines, where each delivery could span 1000–1500 km and often took two to three days to complete – a very different style of trucking to what he experiences here at McNeill!

While the Southland scenery is hard to beat, Michael says the perfect road trip wouldn’t be complete without the right company. If he could choose one passenger for a day in his cab, it would be Britney Spears. Her music is pretty good, he reckons… but don’t even mention drum and bass, it’s definitely not his thing!

Michael still laughs about his first day in New Zealand. Stepping off the plane into what he describes as “extreme cold,” he looked at the other four drivers and wondered how he was ever going to survive. To make matters worse, he went three whole days without rice (an experience he clearly hasn’t forgotten!). These days though, he’s fully embraced Kiwi cuisine. His favourite? Sausages - but no tomato sauce required. Looks like he’ll be a regular at our team BBQs!

In just a few months, Michael has already become a skilled and valuable member of the McNeill team, and we are so glad to have him on board!
