We are very enthusiastic about the new installation at the Grand Millennium Auckland, where five kitchens are sourcing their food waste to go through The Green Machine Flagship food waste processor.

The hotel saves itself about 60 percent in emissions. That may still feel like an abstract concept, as it clearly does for most of us, but the practical consequences are looming - besides extreme weather events - in the form of

the carrot; the Millennium will be able to claim via the Emissions Trading Scheme which is being put together by the Government and will be implemented in the next few years, at the time of writing this sitting on NZ $ 67.00 per metric ton of food waste.

And the stick; food waste laws are being tightened right now with severe consequences by 2025 for any commercial food waste producer regarding separation and emissions.

The Grand Millennium also saves itself 80 percent in food waste volume which translates to lesser movements to the waste pickup point, and a reduction in pickup fees as 10 bins have become 2. This volume reduction also saves significantly in emissions relating to food waste transport which will be the next issue https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/131678424/councils-are-transporting-food-scraps-hundreds-of-kilometres-as-nz-tries-to-avoid-dumping-350000-tonnes-of-food-waste-into-landfills-each-year.

This is a prime example where The Green Machine would make a profound difference. By running the food waste through our machines first, the volume reduction of 80 percent would translate into 80 percent less transportation cost - in actual cost, as well as transport GHG emissions!

NZ needs to cut back the 300,000 tonnes of food waste buried in landfills annually, but we are short on facilities to process food scraps.

Aha! Found it - Yep, September 29th is now officially International Food Waste Day - or anti food waste day 🙂.
Your Green Machine reduces at least 60 percent of Green House Gas emissions - straight out of the box!!!!!

Even at a time when Dr. Carr is calling for a reform of the Emissions Trading Scheme
(https://www.odt.co.nz/business/dr-rod-carr-calls-reform-emissions-trading-scheme)
the Green Machine has been favorably used in a report from EAS - Environmental Accounting Services - where Dr. Carly Green is involved in setting up the framework for Emission Trading in New Zealand.
As opposed to the problem Dr Carr has with companies just planting trees to offset their emissions, the Green machine offers a direct and undisputed Green House Gas Emission reduction of at least 60 percent on food waste.

Report from EAS will follow soon! Watch this space.

The emissions trading scheme allows companies to "plant and pollute" and needs reform, Climate Change Commission chairperson Dr Rod Carr says....

Launching “SCRAPS”...

The new mighty little factory in the Green Machine range
In late August we launched the SCRAPS website (www.scraps.nz) to pay particular homage to the new machine on the block – The COMPACT green machine. This little factory chews through 300 kg an hour!

Compared to others in its class (600 wide x700 deep and 900 high) it is very small indeed, and designed for a large commercial kitchen outfit. It fits seamlessly in the waste stream from scraps/plate waste to food waste, reducing the volume and the greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80 percent.

All the mod cons are there: cutlery saver, self cleaning, the three button operation has lit buttons for visual confirmation in a noisy kitchen environment and sensors for safety and to let you know when the bin is full (or not there!).

And, like all the Green Machines, no need for batching – just use when there are SCRAPS!

Food waste on the rise again?

Over the last thirty years, we spent a lot of energy fighting against blatant climate denial from industry and politicians alike.

The good news is that we have mostly won that battle over the last decade. The bad news is that they have a new tactic: greenwashing.

Greenwashing is when businesses or politicians give a false impression that their products or policies have a positive impact on the environment when in reality, they don’t.

It’s very effective, and it’s dangerous.

It’s dangerous because when the Government sells its policies as climate action - when in reality they are not - it misleads the wider public and the climate movement.

People can think they don’t need to push hard on climate because it is under control when it is not.

We then need to spend our time highlighting and explaining why the claimed win is actually spin rather than campaigning for meaningful action. We’ve seen clear examples of this recently, with the Government claiming a partnership with the dairy industry is real climate action when in fact, it is not.

So we need to call out greenwash when we see it, and no matter who we vote for in the next election, we must demand real climate action. For New Zealand, that first and foremost means urgent action to cut climate pollution from the intensive dairy industry by cutting synthetic nitrogen fertiliser.

Why is greenwashing the biggest challenge that the climate movement faces at the moment. How did we get here?
