125 Years on the Water: Port Nelson Through Time

1906 - Steamship Rotoiti breaking the ribbon on opening ‘The Cut’. Passengers paid sixpence (proceeds for the Nelson Hospital), and popular it was by the number of people piled on board. Note the ribbon streaming alongside the hull and on the opposite side tied to a post on the Boulder Bank.

Forty pounds were raised for Nelson Hospital from the sale of on-board rides; the ribbon was retrieved, and snippets were sold for one shilling.

Main Railway wharf at the height of the turn of the century (1904). Horse and carriages and the Port steam train are on the hard stand, horse and drays on the wharf. The centre is the large Bond Store and Harbour Board Offices in front. Note the large escarpment or slip on the hillside.

Throwback to last week, when the largest vessel to ever call at our port was here!

Here is a short clip put together by Tim Cuff, showing off the Maersk Cap Jackson in all her (very large) glory.

Thanks to our marine team for making the ship movement look easy, and to our stevedores for their hard mahi getting containers loaded and unloaded.

Private 5G is being deployed at Port Nelson this week - a major step forward in connectivity and innovation here at the port.

In partnership with Spark and Ericsson we’re deploying a private 5G network across our warehouse operations in Nelson and Blenheim, improving reliability, enhancing safety, and unlocking new ways of working.

From eliminating Wi-Fi dead zones to enabling real-time communication and future smart safety tools, this investment is helping us build a more connected and efficient port.

125 Years on the Water: Port Nelson Through Time

Dredge John Graham (named after the Board chair) is cutting its way through the Boulder Bank. The pontoons carried the spoil to Haulashore Island, the large rocks forming a breakwater on the end.
