🚂 20,000 Followers! Thank you GIVEAWAY! 🚂

For more than 50 years, Steam Incorporated has been preserving, restoring, and operating New Zealand's railway heritage. Today, we're celebrating another milestone. 20,000 people now follow our activities on Facebook!

That's 20,000 people helping us share the stories of our locomotives, our volunteers, our workshops, and the railways that have helped shape New Zealand. Whether you've travelled with us, supported a project, volunteered your time, or simply enjoyed following along, thank you.

🏆 Volunteer of the Year – David Rowland 🏆

At the 2026 FRONZ Conference, Steam Incorporated’s own David Rowland was honoured with the GVR Volunteer of the Year Award.

For many years, David has been one of the quiet forces behind Steam Incorporated’s success. Whether coordinating training, supporting our volunteers, leading our onboard medic team, stepping into management roles when needed, or securing vital funding for major projects, David’s contribution reaches every corner of our organisation.

His work has helped deliver significant improvements to our facilities, rolling stock, safety systems, and volunteer development programmes. Just as importantly, he is always willing to share his knowledge, mentor others, and lend a hand wherever it’s needed.

David embodies everything that makes heritage rail successful — dedication, humility, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to the people around him.

On behalf of everyone at Steam Incorporated, congratulations David on this thoroughly deserved recognition. We are incredibly fortunate to have you as part of our team.

Please join us in congratulating David on this outstanding achievement!

Fresh off being awarded the NZ Safety Blackwoods Motive Power Award at the 2026 FRONZ Conference, we are proud to reflect on the remarkable restoration journey of DC4375. Here are just a small collection of a much bigger collection of photos!

Arriving at Paekākāriki in April 2021 after retirement from KiwiRail service, DC4375 represented both an important part of New Zealand’s diesel locomotive history and a significant challenge. What followed was years of dedication from an incredible team of volunteers and supporters, tackling extensive bodywork repairs, corrosion removal, cab refurbishment, mechanical work, and countless hours of detailed restoration.

By August 2025, DC4375 returned to the mainline in a striking NZ Rail Blue-inspired livery, proudly carrying our name. Since then, the locomotive has gone on to operate heritage and scenic rail services across primarily the South Island, beginning a new chapter in preservation after more than 50 years of railway service.

To everyone who played a part in the restoration, supported the project, or travelled behind DC4375 since its return to service — thank you. This award belongs to all of you.

Here's to many more years of DC4375 on the mainline! 🚂💙

🏆 A Proud Night for Steam Incorporated at the 2026 FRONZ Conference 🏆

We are incredibly proud to celebrate a fantastic evening of recognition for both Steam Incorporated and the people who make our organisation what it is.

This year, Steam Incorporated was honoured to receive the NZ Safety Blackwoods Motive Power Award for the restoration of locomotive DC 4375 — a project that represents thousands of hours, immense dedication, and a shared commitment to preserving New Zealand’s railway heritage.

A special congratulations also goes to David Rowland, who was awarded the GVR Volunteer of the Year Award. David’s passion, commitment, and tireless contribution to our organisation over many years make him a truly deserving recipient.

Finally, we are thrilled to have jointly received the Paul Dillicar Award for Innovation, alongside Pounamu Tourism Group and Canterbury Railway Society, recognising our collaborative efforts to expand and promote additional passenger rail experiences in the South Island.

These awards belong to every volunteer, member, supporter, partner, and passenger who helps make our work possible. Thank you for being part of the journey.

Here’s to preserving our heritage, growing rail and creating memorable experiences for generations to come. 🚂
