We embarked on a fun small group trip from Whakatu/Nelson to Te Whanganui a Tara/Wellington on Anzac Weekend. Four of our cultural exchange students from Italy and Switzerland had two days to explore the city life in our capital and two days on a typical NZ lifestyle block in Otaki. From scooter adventures to walks on the beach, Wellington Zoo to feeding sheep feijoas, city lights to making beeswax candles, photos of the government Beehive to going into beehives and Lush face masks to making our own walnut face oil. There was not much spare time to relax. When away - the girls will play. We had a very educational and fun time in Wellington with amazing weather, a night sauna on Waikenae Beach and even a round of Just Dance, some homemade Italian Pizza in a wood fired oven and one reasonable sleep in. (after our early start for the dawn Anzac parade).
I love being an escort/guide on trips like this and helping people build meaningful memories. 😍

When I have picked up clients and taken them to their hotels I always ask what their highlights have been and one couple said they had the best meal of their trip at Little Dove Cafe on Collingwood St by the river/bridge. So I made a mental note and took my friend along on her bday to see what the rave was all about. Now I am not a coffee snob, but I had the nicest coffee I have ever tasted. (Kylie had a Chai). We had a great barista, revive beans from Petone, Oakland milk and some raw organic sugar (I know I know! 🙄😜). I am heading back purely for the coffee vibes. The pulled lamb with sourdough and pickled quince with hummus was delish and totally filled the space I reserved for lunch. Loved our first visit to a quaint hidden gem of Nelson. Check it out next time you want a lunch date. The flower boxes out front definatley have the "bike to me" call going on. 10/10 for location, food, service and coffee. We relaxed on a riverside bench to chat after.

Next time you are in the Nelson Lakes National Park region you can try the Pinchgut Track. We went to the Visitor Information Centre and asked for a recommended 3 hour return walk and found this one to the top of Mt Robert. You drive to the last carpark where the walk starts at around 600m high. It has a reasonable elevation with a solid zigzag uphill climb for a couple of hours with stops. We started in warm clothes, quickly reached the sun and stripped a layer, then at the top we were back into scarf, gloves and jackets as the breeze had a big chill factor. Take plenty of snacks, a hiking pole if you like the extra support (I loved having mine. It was my first time using one and it was really really good) and warm warm clothes. The weather turns fast in this region.
We didn't start our walk til 12.15pm and got back around 4.30pm. Tonnes of stops on the way. Of course these stops we're compulsory to admire the views and nothing to do with recovering from burning quads!!! 😜. The give up factor kicked in a few times with my teens in tow, but when I finally conceded to their begging to turn around, they declined and decided to press on. It was so worth it and they knew the sense of accomplishment would outweigh the pain and tiredness ultimately. We inherently love having a goal and moving beyond our comfort always pays off in the pride we feel for overcoming. Have you done this walk? Do these photos make you want to?

Thanks to years of accumulating Qantas airpoints on Visa, we have taken a wee vacation to China via Melbourne. Tripadeal had an amazing 10 day trip all subsidized by the Chinese Tourism Board to help boost tourism in China post covid. It has been on Chris bucket list of countries to visit so we head off tomorrow. My trip started with a weekend in Tauranga to attend a 1 day meeting with all the tour managers for NZET (New Zealand Educational Tours). It was a fantastic day enjoyed by about 15 of us as we mapped out the upcoming tours, participated in a Tikanga Maori workshop and got to know each other better. I then flew to Wellies and picked Chris up and we flew on to Melbourne where we decided to squish in a 3 day roady on the Great Ocean Road before we fly out to Beijing tomorrow. Had the best time out in nature with a very rich immersive experience of the senses. Amazing ocean smells, the noises of different bird species and the ocean roaring below high wind swept cliff tops. It was a visual masterpiece with very little room left for anything but awe, joy and gratitude. We stayed in 2 sweet towns with lovely rooms and hosts and just enjoyed every minute of it. Topped off with an incidental private tour of a wildlife park as we turned up at Warnambool this morning to a session where no one else was booked. So cool!

I realise in a day and age where cucumbers are $5.99 and rates are up 15 percent on 2023, that we are not all in a position to enjoy holidays like the one I am having. And whilst many of you say you enjoy my posts and adventures, I acknowledge that it can be hard to watch others doing things you can only dream of. I encourage people to find ways to have "pocket adventures" in your own back yard. Take a stroll down a path you wouldn't normally go and stop for longer to look for eels or birds. Say yes to an invite that scares you a bit, invite someone you admire over for a cup of tea, bake your neighbour a cake, take your dog to a resthome, have McDonald's for breakfast with kids before school one day, or drive to a beach you have always wanted to explore. Sometimes the very best adventures are the ones in your back yard.
I thought twice about sharing this trip on Facebook and have decided I will record my travels over on my page Pocket Adventures just so that those interested can follow me and those not so keen can just see any regular posts I put up. I do enjoy recording my travels and started this page ages ago. It had a wee hiatus (even though the adventures never stopped), so I will get active again on the page. Here's a couple of photos as a teaser but follow my page for more. :-)

A number of years ago we sought some feedback about whether to travel NZ with a pop top camper or using Air BnB. The camper got your vote. Well in March we "took a wee look" at a bus...Nek minute - without looking any further...it was ours. These holidays, now our exchange students have returned to their countries (so sad 😭😭😭) we decided to take our bus on a 1 week roady to Auckland where Chris and I will be part of a team from Your Education - welcoming over 100 students to NZ for their cultural exchange experience. We will share our daily pocket adventures with you. Tune in on our stories...or I might post a reel - of the people, places and things we do along our journey. The simple pleasures...nothing fancy, visiting friends and finding bike tracks and playing cards, crocheting and reading books.

Matariki 2022. With train fares half price we decided to head from Otaki to Wellington City on Metlink for the Matariki Fireworks. The vibe was amazing! So many people out enjoying the celebrations of remembering life past and celebrating life in the future. It really felt like a community and Wellington totally pulled it off! One for the win!
