Over the past week the Fiordland College team has been playing at the Kate Trolove Cup mixed schools' tournament in Nelson against 9 other schools from around the South Island. The game results from the week don't really tell the story about how well this young team has performed.

In every game played the team was more than competitive, giving their opponents a real run for their money, with the margins between a win and a loss very small. While they failed to win a game in pool play, they did win their final game against Maniatoto High 4 - 1, to win the post-pool section and finish 9th.

The growth in the team over the past 12 months has been huge, both as individuals and as a group. Looking forward to what they can achieve in 2027.

In the weekend our young hockey players travelled to Invercargill for the Year 5 + 6 hockey tournament. We had a team of 8 and the country we represented was Australia so dressed up with tutus, ribbons and face paint.
We played 4 games against Fiji, NZ, UK and Italy.
The kids all put in full effort for every game and it was so good to see them working as a team and each game getting better, seeing their passes reaching the right players and even a couple of goals scored!
In between games we supported the bake sale and sausage sizzle for the Under 16 girls tournament team!

All and all the players, coaches and supporters had a great day out and the younger ones can’t wait to play again next year!

The team will be coached by two of the College team members in Talia Turner and Tarn Bell.

It has been an exciting year for the Fiordland College hockey team, and our buildup to the final had been a climactic one. Over the course of the season, we had only lost two games, one of which was against Northern Southland College, one of our most recent games against them. We were facing them for the final, which meant the stakes were high, as our track record with NSC wasn’t as good as with other teams.

Going into the game, we had confidence, but were still taking our warmup seriously. Throughout the season, our first quarters had usually been our worst ones, and we had built a bad habit of only getting into our A-game in the second quarter. However, this game surprised us, as we began with a 3-0 goal lead by quarter time. The energy both on the field and off was skyrocketing, and our gameplay as a team had reached a new level. Fiordland dominated the rest of the game, and we ended up taking away the win with the score 3-0.

What a way to end the season. This game showed us what we can accomplish if we play to our full potential. Going into the tournament next week, we are hoping to perform well and get some good results.

Huge thanks to our coach, Colin, and our team manager, Megan, as their contributions to the team have been massive. We really appreciate everything from them.

CHAMPIONS!

College team win Southland Secondary Schools Mixed & Girls Division 1 final against Northern Southland College 3 - 0.

Fiordland came out of the gates hard, scoring 3 goals – Riley Carter - 2, Zach McMurtrie -1) in the first quarter to establish a lead they never looked like relinquishing. Though they weren’t able to add to the score, they did create plenty more chances and, were the better team throughout.

NSC never gave up trying but, a gritty Fiordland defense was solid throughout, breaking down most attacks well outside the circle to keep a clean sheet. As always senior team members lead the way but, everyone made a positive contribution to the result and can be well pleased with the way they played. A huge team effort.

This was a great dress rehearsal for tournament beginning 31 August in Nelson.

We are down to the end of the small sticks season with one more session to go next week. It was great to see all the players play a game at the end and put some of their position knowledge to the test, with lots figuring out where to play and stick to their general area.

Players of the day this week were Zoe Anderson and Cooper Turner. Well done!
