The journey took 644 far from home as part of the FRONZ50 celebrations, marking 50 years of the Federation of Rail Organisations of New Zealand and its work supporting New Zealand’s heritage and tourist rail sector.
Built at Dunedin’s Hillside Workshops in 1915, Ww 644 travelled to Palmerston North for the first time in more than 50 years. Over Matariki Weekend, she became one of the stars of a major celebration of railway heritage, hauling special trains and joining railway organisations and enthusiasts from across the country.
The weekend also marked a significant milestone for the heritage rail sector, with the trains crewed entirely by heritage groups’ own qualified drivers and operating crews — a proud demonstration of the skill, experience and capability that exists within New Zealand’s preservation movement.
Finn’s film captures much more than a steam locomotive at work. It tells the story of the people, preparation, landscapes and teamwork behind taking a 110-year-old locomotive across the national rail network.
Turn up the sound, settle in and experience The Ride of 644.
A huge congratulations and thank you to Finn for documenting this remarkable chapter in 644’s story.
