🎬🚂 PREMIERE: THE RIDE OF 644 - TONIGHT @ 7pm 🚂🎬

One year ago today — 11 June 2025 — steam locomotive Ww 644 departed Glenbrook on an extraordinary mainline adventure through the North Island.

Now, relive the journey in The Ride of 644, a stunning new film produced by our Operations Manager, Finn O’Regan.

▶️ Watch the premiere here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SErSaABSeL0

The journey took 644 far from home as part of the FRONZ50 celebrations, marking 50 years of the Federation of Rail Organisations of New Zealand and its work supporting New Zealand’s heritage and tourist rail sector.

Built at Dunedin’s Hillside Workshops in 1915, Ww 644 travelled to Palmerston North for the first time in more than 50 years. Over Matariki Weekend, she became one of the stars of a major celebration of railway heritage, hauling special trains and joining railway organisations and enthusiasts from across the country.

The weekend also marked a significant milestone for the heritage rail sector, with the trains crewed entirely by heritage groups’ own qualified drivers and operating crews — a proud demonstration of the skill, experience and capability that exists within New Zealand’s preservation movement.

Finn’s film captures much more than a steam locomotive at work. It tells the story of the people, preparation, landscapes and teamwork behind taking a 110-year-old locomotive across the national rail network.

Turn up the sound, settle in and experience The Ride of 644.

A huge congratulations and thank you to Finn for documenting this remarkable chapter in 644’s story.

🚂 Thank You for a Fantastic FRONZ Conference 2026! 🚂

What a fantastic few days it was, hosting delegates from across New Zealand's heritage rail and tramway sector here in Auckland for the 2026 Federation of Rail Organisations of New Zealand (FRONZ) Conference over King's Birthday Weekend.

On behalf of the Glenbrook Vintage Railway, thank you to everyone who attended, presented, volunteered, exhibited, sponsored, supported and contributed to making the conference such a success. It was wonderful to see representatives from so many organisations come together to share ideas, celebrate achievements, discuss challenges and strengthen the relationships that help our sector thrive.

Over the conference weekend delegates enjoyed presentations, networking opportunities and visits to a diverse range of Auckland and Waikato heritage attractions, showcasing the incredible work being undertaken by preservation groups throughout the region.

A special thank you must go to our sponsors and supporters whose generosity helped make the event possible. We are incredibly grateful for your contribution to both the conference and the wider heritage rail sector.

We would also like to acknowledge the many volunteers from Glenbrook Vintage Railway and our partner organisations who worked behind the scenes for many months planning, organising and delivering the event. Events like this simply do not happen without your dedication and commitment.

Most importantly, thank you to every delegate who travelled from near and far to be part of the conference. The enthusiasm, knowledge and passion on display throughout the weekend reminds us why New Zealand's heritage rail and tramway movement continues to achieve so much.

We wish everyone safe travels home and look forward to seeing what the next year brings for our industry.
