Wanaka and Christchurch offices are merging! ✨

At World Travellers Wanaka, we’ve always believed the best journeys are about connection. Connecting people with cultures, stories, and unforgettable moments. 🌏

To bring you even more expertise, a wider network of travel designers, and the same boutique service you’ve come to love, we’re excited to share that our Wanaka and Christchurch teams are officially joining forces under one unified name: World Travellers Navigators ✈

This has been in the back of our minds for a while. Since COVID, we no longer have physical stores in Christchurch or Wanaka, and our travel brokers are now based all around the South Island (and some even in the North Island!). We wanted our name and presence to better reflect who we are today. And because we’re no longer tied to two locations, it makes sense to bring everyone together under one shared “home”.

What does this mean for you?
This page will soon go quiet. We’re moving all our travel inspiration, expert tips, and upcoming 2026/2027 tours to our primary page.

5 Facts You Might Not Know About African Elephants 🐘

We all know elephants as the gentle giants of Africa, but there’s so much more to them than meets the eye. Here are a few fascinating things you may not know:

1️⃣ Two different species
Africa is home to both the savanna elephant, the largest land animal on earth, and the smaller forest elephant, which lives in central and western Africa.

2️⃣ Their ears are like air conditioners
Those giant ears aren’t just for show. Packed with blood vessels, they help elephants regulate body temperature in the African heat.

3️⃣ A trunk with 40,000 muscles
Elephants use their trunks to eat, drink, communicate, and even show affection. They can delicately pick up a blade of grass or tear down a tree branch.

4️⃣ They’re essential to the ecosystem
By knocking down trees, digging for water, and spreading seeds, elephants shape the landscapes they live in. Some plants can only germinate after passing through an elephant’s digestive system!

5️⃣ Matriarchal families
Elephant herds are led by females, often the oldest and wisest member. She guides the group to food, water, and safety, passing knowledge through generations.

Elephants aren’t just incredible to see on safari — they’re vital to Africa’s ecosystems and cultures. Which of these facts surprised you the most?

Zimbabwe Highlights 🇿🇼

This 8-day safari combines three of Zimbabwe’s most spectacular regions, each offering something different but equally unforgettable.

🦁 Hwange National Park – Start with two nights in Hwange, famous for its large elephant herds and big cats. Here you might spot lion, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, wildebeest and more. Staying in an exclusive camp means up-close encounters and game drives in a more remote corner of the park.

🌊 Lake Kariba & Matusadona National Park – Next, fly to the shores of Lake Kariba for two nights at Changa Camp. This area is a walker’s paradise, where guided walks bring you closer to the land and its wildlife. Game drives, boat cruises and even fishing are all part of the experience, with leopard, lion, and hyena often seen.

🌿 Mana Pools National Park – Finish with three nights at Ruckomechi Camp on the Zambezi River. Known for its acacia forests and wide river views, Mana Pools is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Activities include canoeing, catch-and-release fishing, morning walks, and day and night game drives.

With flights between camps included, all meals, drinks, and twice-daily activities, this is a safari designed to be seamless and deeply rewarding — letting you focus on the wildlife and the landscapes around you.

👉 If Zimbabwe has been on your radar, now might be the time. Get in touch and we’ll help you plan a journey that brings these extraordinary places to life.

Destination Highlight: Georgia 🇬🇪

Nestled between the Black Sea and the towering Caucasus Mountains, Georgia is a small country with a big personality. It’s a place where ancient traditions meet striking landscapes — and where hospitality is a way of life.

In the capital Tbilisi, you can wander through cobbled streets lined with colourful balconies, admire centuries-old churches, and soak in the city’s famous sulphur baths. A short drive takes you to the wine-growing region of Kakheti, where winemaking has been part of the culture for over 8,000 years. 🍷

Nature lovers will find plenty to explore — from the snow-capped peaks of the Kazbegi region to the rolling hills and wildflower meadows of Tusheti. And if you’re after history, Georgia is dotted with UNESCO-listed monasteries, ancient cave towns, and fortresses that tell stories of its complex past.

Warm welcomes, hearty feasts, and an endless supply of khachapuri (cheese bread) make travelling in Georgia a truly memorable experience.

Would Georgia be on your travel wishlist?

⭐Exploring Baku’s Old City, with its medieval walls, Maiden Tower, and the striking rock art of Gobustan National Park.

⭐Tasting wine in Georgia, considered the birthplace of viticulture, and visiting the charming towns of Sighnaghi and Telavi. 🍷

⭐Discovering Armenia’s ancient monasteries, beautiful Lake Sevan, and panoramic views of Mt Ararat.

🌌 Aurora Australis

You might know it as the Southern Lights but did you know the Aurora Australis is one of the rarest auroral displays on Earth? While its northern cousin often steals the spotlight, the Southern Lights can be just as striking—and often less crowded to watch.

Here are a few things you might not know:
🌒 Best time to see it? Around the equinoxes
Auroral activity often peaks around the March and September equinox, especially during periods of high solar activity. Late autumn and winter are your best bet for dark, clear skies.

📍 You don’t have to go to Antarctica
Popular southern viewing spots include:
💫Stewart Island / Rakiura (designated Dark Sky Sanctuary)
💫The Catlins – think Curio Bay or Nugget Point
💫Otago Peninsula – low light, wide views
💫Lake Tekapo and the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve

💡 The Māori knew it too
In Māori tradition, the Aurora Australis is known as Tahunui-a-rangi, sometimes interpreted as campfires of ancestors reflected in the sky, guiding voyagers across vast oceans.

☀️ It all starts with the sun
The aurora is triggered by solar flares—bursts of energy from the sun. When these flares are especially strong, the resulting auroras can be seen much further north than usual. Keeping an eye on space weather forecasts can help you plan.

📸 Tips if you're chasing it
💫Use a tripod and long exposure
💫Face south with a clear horizon
💫Apps like “Aurora Australis Forecast & Southern Lights Alert” or “My Aurora Forecast” can give you real-time alerts

Who here has seen Aurora? Let us know in the comments!
