During our 2024 community health needs research, we heard from community members about the challenges of accessing care and support for loved ones living with eating disorders.
In response to our official information request, Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora also advised that clinical teams in the Wฤnaka, Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes areas had anecdotally reported an increase in young people presenting with eating disorders. This feedback reinforced what we were hearing from our community.
In response, we decided to bring people together to talk about this.
Weโre partnering with Path Wฤnaka Ara ki Wฤnaka and Central Otago REAP to host a community conversation about eating disorders. This event aims to:
โข Increase awareness of the signs and symptoms to support early identification and intervention.
โข Challenge common myths and misconceptions.
โข Provide information about local and regional supports and services.
โข Raise awareness of Eating Disorder Carer Support (EDCS).
โข Explore the potential for establishing a local Upper Clutha support group.
We warmly invite parents, whฤnau, teachers, counsellors, and health professionals who want to better support those affected to join us.
