Last day of the conference meant it was time to experience some local tourism for myself. I picked up a rental car from Devine Rentals and headed to Akaroa—a place I'd never visited before.

Wow, what a drive! Just 1.5 hours from Christchurch, the journey is spectacular from start to finish. Snow-capped landscapes, beautiful lakes, rolling hills, and classic New Zealand scenery made the drive as memorable as the destination.

Once in Akaroa, I joined a two-hour dolphin cruise with Black Cat Cruises hoping to spot the world's smallest and rarest marine dolphin—the endangered Hector's dolphin—along with the incredible marine and birdlife the harbour is known for.

Black Cat Cruises are true leaders in eco-tourism, and today's crew were fantastic—knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate about the local wildlife. Even better, they kept us warm with a hot drink while we were out on the water!

Akaroa itself is a charming historic seaside town, famous for its unique French colonial heritage, and it's absolutely worth the visit. The scenery on the drive back somehow looked even more spectacular than it did on the way there.

If you're visiting Christchurch and have a day to spare, I can highly recommend making the trip to Akaroa. It's a brilliant day out and one of the highlights of my week.
