☀️ What to Pack for a European Summer River Cruise with AmaWaterways

One of the most common questions I get asked is:

What should I pack for a European summer river cruise and what’s the dress code on board?

If you’re cruising with AmaWaterways, their onboard atmosphere is elegant but relaxed, making packing much easier than many people expect.

👗 Here’s what I recommend packing:

✅ Lightweight linen shirts and blouses
✅ Breathable dresses, skirts or chinos
✅ Tailored shorts for sightseeing
✅ Comfortable walking shoes or stylish sneakers
✅ Sandals for warmer days
✅ A light cardigan or jacket for cooler mornings and evenings
✅ Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
✅ Swimwear (many AmaWaterways ships have a sun deck pool)
✅ A small crossbody bag or daypack for excursions

🍷 What’s the dress code on board?

During the day, comfortable sightseeing clothes are perfect. For dinner, think smart casual—summer dresses, elegant separates, collared shirts and lightweight trousers. There are no formal nights, although many guests enjoy dressing up a little for the Captain’s or Farewell Dinner.

A perfect day exploring the fairytale town of Český Krumlov, Czech Republic 🇨🇿

Today was everything you could hope for on a European river cruise. We explored the magnificent Český Krumlov Castle, wandered through the charming cobblestone streets of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town and soaked up the rich history and stunning architecture around every corner.

Lunch was a true Czech experience, enjoyed beside the picturesque Vltava River, followed by a little retail therapy in the town’s unique boutiques and artisan shops.

After a scenic coach journey through the beautiful Czech countryside, we return to AmaSofia just in time for a relaxing Sip & Sail Cocktail Hour before another exceptional dinner and evening of entertainment onboard.

It’s days like these that remind you why river cruising is one of the best ways to experience Europe and you have the comfort of unpacking only once!

Visiting the concentration camp near Linz with AmaWaterways was one of the most moving experiences of my journey through Europe.

Day one of our AmaWaterways river cruise. While the low water levels on the Danube meant we couldn’t embark on the AmaSofia in Budapest as planned, we’ve been wonderfully looked after.

Instead, we’re spending the night at the gorgeous Hotel Dorothea. A little sightseeing, a little shopping, a few drinks and a lovely welcome dinner have made for a fantastic start to the journey.

The entire holiday has been masterfully re-coordinated, ensuring we’re still experiencing the very best of the destinations, along with the exceptional service AmaWaterways is known for.
