Tarahuasi: The Hidden Inca Sanctuary of Apurímac

Along the ancient Qhapaq Ñan route, near Abancay lies Tarahuasi, an Inca ceremonial center that served both as a tambo (resting and supply station) and a sacred site.

Believed to have been built under the rule of Pachacútec, Tarahuasi impresses visitors with its polished polygonal stone walls, reminiscent of Cusco’s architecture, as well as terraces and rectangular enclosures that reflect the grandeur of the Inca Empire.

Far more than a stop along the road, it was a stage for solar rituals and ceremonies of gratitude to nature, making it one of the lesser-known archaeological gems of the Andes.
