« It’s even more beautiful than I could have imagined » -Marlon Brando discovering Tetiaroa

The atoll of Tetiaroa floats some 50 kilometers from Tahiti. It was once the refuge of Marlon Brando, who bought it and set up his ideal world.
Tetiaroa is bursting with life, a natural wonder begging to be explored.

Moorea meaning « Yellow Lizard » in Tahitian but why ?

- A long time ago, a young man named Temaiatea and his wife lived on the island of Maiao, near Moorea, formerly known as Aimeho. The young woman became pregnant and gave birth to an egg, which they laid in a small cave until it hatched. In her sleep, the wife had the vision that she had given birth to a boy with yellowish skin. When she woke up and told him about her dream, Temaiatea discovered that it had hatched into a baby yellow lizard. So he named him « Moo-rea », literally yellow lizard. He and his wife looked after him and fed him until he was big. When he became enormous, the wife insisted on abandoning him, for fear that the lizard would end up eating them. The husband reluctantly agreed and set about building a pirogue to escape from the island, heading towards the rising sun, towards Tahiti.
The lizard, no longer fed, felt abandoned and filled with despair, and threw himself into the sea in search of his beloved parents. He set off towards the east, but faced three terrible currents. Exhausted from his struggle, he drowned and washed up on the Vaianae shore at Aimeho.
The next morning, when two men went fishing, they discovered this enormous creature lying on the beach and ran to warn the islanders, shouting: « It’s a yellow lizard! E mo’o re’a! And so Moorea became the name of the island, in commemoration of this giant yellow lizard.
